Alec Baldwin said he is cooperating with police. And he’s offering his support for the family of Halyna Hutchins, who died on the set of the actor’s new movie.

Baldwin posted a statement on Twitter Friday morning. These were his first comments since news of Hutchins’ death broke Thursday night.

Alec Baldwin reportedly discharged a prop firearm. One shot killed Hutchins, the movie’s cinematographer. She was 42. A shot from the firearm also injured director, Joel Souza, 48. Souza also wrote the movie.

Baldwin posted on Twitter: “There are no words to convey my shock and sadness regarding the tragic accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a wife, mother and deeply admired colleague of ours. I’m fully cooperating with the police investigation to address how this tragedy occurred and I am in touch with her husband, offering my support to him and his family. My heart is broken for her husband, their son, and all who knew and loved Halyna.”

Sheriff’s Deputies Interviewing People On Set of Alec Baldwin Movie

The incident happened Thursday afternoon on the set of the movie, Rust. The film is in production at Bonanza Creek Ranch, which is near Santa Fe, N. M. Movie producers often use the ranch as a setting for westerns.

A spokesman for Alec Baldwin confirmed the actor shot the firearm. The prop gun was supposed to be loaded with blanks. You can hear blanks when they fire. There often is a flash. But there should be no projectile that could harm someone.

Juan Rios, a spokesman for the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office, told reporters that it was unclear whether the gun went off during rehearsal or actual filming. He said officers currently are interviewing witnesses. Rios said police will determine what “projectile” was used in the firearm.

Rios also said that Alec Baldwin was free to travel. “He’s a free man,” Rios told reporters.

Baldwin was seen outside the sheriff’s office. He was visibly upset.

There are no charges, as yet.

First Responders Air Lifted Hutchins to Albuquerque Hospital

Emergency first responders took Hutchins to a hospital in Albuquerque via helicopter. That’s where she died. Meanwhile, Souza traveled by ambulance to a hospital in Santa Fe. Souza suffered an injury to his collar bone. He’s now out of the hospital.

Hutchins was born in Ukraine. She grew up on a Soviet military base. And she moved to Los Angeles to study film making. And Hutchins liked to post photos from the set of the Alec Baldwin movie. On Tuesday, she shared photos of herself riding horses in New Mexico.

Fans noticed her photos and reposted them on social media.

Alec Baldwin plays the grandfather in Rust. According to IMDB, Rust is about a 13 year-old boy living in 1880s era Kansas. His parents died and left he and his brother orphaned. The boy goes on the run with his grandfather. The accident shut down production of the movie.
