Outsider’s previous coverage cited an unknown cast member as the person who fired the prop gun on the Rust set. Two crew members were struck as a result of the discharge. One was killed, the other injured. Now, it is clear that Rust actor and producer Alec Baldwin pulled the trigger.

The initial statement from the production called the situation an “accident.” Investigators are trying to determine if that is the case. And further, how such an accident happened in the first place.

The investigation is ongoing. And there is still nothing definitive in terms of Alec Baldwin’s intent. It is unknown at present whether or not he knew there were live rounds in the prop firearm.

Deadline shared the statement from the Santa Fe Sheriff’s Department.

“Santa Fe County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the Bonanza Creek Ranch movie set of the western ‘Rust,’ October 21, 2021, when a 911 caller reported a shooting on the set,” the statement reads.

“The sheriff’s office confirms that two individuals were shot on the set of Rust. Halyna Hutchins, 42, director of photography and Joel Souza, 48, director, were shot when a prop firearm was discharged by Alec Baldwin, 68, producer and actor.”

Alec Baldwin hasn’t yet commented on the situation. But we’ll have it covered here at Outsider if/when he does issue a statement.

Halyna Hutchins, Cinematographer, Was the Woman Killed After Alec Baldwin Fired the Prop Gun

A projectile from the prop gun hit Hutchins in the stomach. She was working as the cinematographer for the film at the time. Tragically, Hutchins died as a result of the shooting. She received emergency stomach surgery. But her wounds proved too severe.

The other victim was Joel Souza, the film’s writer and director. His wounds were less severe as he was hit in the shoulder. Fortunately, it looks like he will make a recovery. However, he remains in the hospital. An ambulance took him to Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center for treatment.

The National President of the Cinematographer’s Guild, John Lindley, shared some words regarding Halyna Hutchins’ death.

“We received the devastating news this evening, that one of our members, Halyna Hutchins, the Director of Photography on a production called ‘Rust’ in New Mexico, died from injuries sustained on the set. The details are unclear at this moment. But we are working to learn more, and we support a full investigation into this tragic event. This is a terrible loss, and we mourn the passing of a member of our Guild’s family.”

The Rust production shut down earlier today. But there is no word on how the movie will proceed, if at all. What we do know is that it’s an unfortunate and tragic situation. We will keep you posted as more information becomes available.
