Alec Baldwin is done with Twitter for the moment. The 62-year-old actor tweeted recently that he was through with the social media platform following the bizarre controversy surrounding his wife’s contested Spanish heritage.

“Twitter is like a party where everyone is screaming. Not much of a party. Goodbye for now,” he wrote.

People on Twitter have accused Alec Baldwin’s wife, Hilaria Baldwin, 36, of a “decade-long grift where she impersonates a Spanish person.” That’s because several interviews have surfaced where she speaks with a thick Spanish accent and in other videos she doesn’t have one at all. In some of those interviews she forgets the names of common items such as a cucumber, as if English isn’t her first language.

All of this came as a shock to her classmates at The Cambridge School of Weston, the Boston Herald reported. They remembered her as Hillary Hayward-Thomas — not Hilaria — from Cambridge, Mass., who was born in Boston.

Hilaria Baldwin Attempts to Clear Up Her Biography

Hilaria Baldwin posted an Instagram video on Sunday to clarify her past.

“I was born in Boston and grew up spending time with my family between Massachusetts and Spain,” Baldwin said “My parents and sibling live in Spain and I chose to live here, in the USA. We celebrate both cultures in our home — Alec and I are raising our children bilingual, just as I was raised.”

However, her history has changed in the telling over the years.

A 2018 article in Hola! USA says she was born in Spain.

“Hilaria, who was born in Spain, has made certain to raise her children with her native language, Spanish,” the article states. “‘I speak to them in Spanish. Alec does not speak Spanish so he speaks to them in English. He’ll try like a little bit and then next year Carmen is going to go to a bilingual school,’ [Baldwin] shared.”

She told the New York Times that the mistake was Hola! USA’s fault.

The magazine issued a correction last month, saying they got the information from Hilaria Baldwin’s biography on her Creative Artists Agency bio. That biography had claimed she was born in Mallorca, Spain. Hilaria Baldwin said they must have gotten incorrect information from the internet.

Though, Baldwin said herself in April of last year on the Mom Truths podcast that she moved to the United States when she was 19 to go to NYU. the Boston Herald reported. When asked where she was from, Baldwin replied “From — my family lives in Spain.”

And as for her waxing and waning Spanish accent, she told the New York Times that she is bilingual. And that her accent grows in intensity or fades depending on her mood.

Alec Baldwin has defended his wife throughout the controversy.
