Alec Baldwin Says He Refuses to Work on Movie With Guns Again

During ABC News’ recent interview with Alec Baldwin, he admitted his acting career may be over, but at a minimum, he’ll never work on the set of a film that uses guns ever again.

Baldwin sat down with George Stephanopoulos for an exclusive interview that aired on Thursday. The actor opened up about the alleged accidental shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust. The incident happened as the cast and crew filmed the independent western movie just outside of Santa Fe, New Mexico in October.

While setting up an upcoming scene, Hutchins supposedly directed Baldwin to point the gun just off-camera near her. The actor says he pulled back the hammer, but never pulled the trigger. When he released the hammer, thinking there were no live rounds in the gun, the firearm discharged an unexpected live round. The shooting killed Hutchins and injured Rust director Joel Souza.

When Stephanopoulos asked Baldwin if his career is over, the 63-year-old said he “couldn’t give a s–t.”

“It could be, it could be,” Alec Baldwin admitted in the ABC News interview. “If I decide that I — I mean, could I work? I’m gonna go make another movie in January. And I said to them, ‘Do you wanna get out of it? Do you wanna get rid of me ’cause of what happened?’ They said, ‘No.’ But I say to myself, ‘Do I wanna work much more after that? Is it worth it?’”

The 30 Rock star also revealed that he couldn’t imagine ever working on the set of a movie if guns are involved ever again. However, Baldwin stands by the fact that he is not responsible for Hutchins’ tragic death.

“I might have killed myself if I thought I was responsible. And I don’t say that lightly,” he said. “I feel that someone is responsible for what happened, and I can’t say who that is, but I know it’s not me.”

Alec Baldwin Emphasizes That He Was Taking Direction From the Cinematographer

Alec Baldwin has come under fire from fans and fellow actors since being involved with cinematographer Halyna Hutchins’ death. Many have claimed that no one should ever point a gun directly at anyone else on the set of a movie. Yet Baldwin says he was simply taking direction from Hutchins as she set up a shot for the movie’s next scene.

“I would never point a gun at anyone and then pull the trigger, never. Someone put a live bullet in the gun, a bullet that wasn’t even supposed to be on the property,” Alec Baldwin stated in the interview.

According to Rust assistant director Dave Halls and his attorney, the actor is telling the truth. Halls’ attorney Lisa Torraco also spoke with ABC News recently and shared that Baldwin’s finger was never on the trigger of the gun. Additionally, Torraco called the shooting a “freak, awful accident.”

“Dave has told me since the very first day I met him that Alec did not pull that trigger,” Torraco said to ABC News. “The entire time, Baldwin had his finger outside the trigger guard, parallel to the barrel. … [Halls] told me since day one that he thought it was a misfire. It was a pure accident — freak, awful accident [that] unfortunately killed somebody.”
