Fans of American Pickers know that it takes a different kind of person to be in the picking business. Mike Wolfe, Frank Fritz, and Danielle Colby are all unique individuals. The same goes for the people they meet along the way. However, some of the people they’ve bought from have been a little more far-out than others. For instance, there’s the infamous Mole Man that kept all of his treasures in an underground lair. Mike and Frank had to go through some treacherous terrain to pick that spot. However, Mole Man isn’t the strangest collector they’ve dealt with. In fact, he’s not even close.
Mole Man’s weirdness pales in comparison to that of a collector simply known as Prince Mongo. They met the 300+-year-old extraterrestrial being in his Memphis warehouse during the 12th season of American Pickers. If you’ve never heard of Memphis’ own alien prince and constant mayoral candidate, you’re in for quite a treat.
As the American Pickers team makes their way into the warehouse, Mike calls out to the collector. He announces their presence and mentions that Prince Mongo spoke to Dani on the phone. The Prince was in the upstairs office of the warehouse. He called down to the pickers saying, “I’m in the tower, the spiritual tower. Come up.”
So, the American Pickers make their way up the stairs. When they arrive in the upstairs office they find Prince Mongo behind his desk and he is a sight to behold.
Mike Wolfe described him perfectly in a cutaway clip. “Frank and I have met a lot of interesting people over the years, but Mongo, he’s a character. He’s got the round glasses on, he’s got a crooked wig, I think he’s got a Masonic robe on.”
Prince Mongo: The Strangest ‘American Pickers’ Collector?
Almost Immediately, Mongo “blessed” the American Pickers team by tossing handfuls of white powder on them and proclaiming them blessed. Then, Prince Mongo introduces himself in his own cutaway scene. “I came to Earth approximately 333 years ago from the planet Zambodia,” Mongo said.
The Prince doesn’t stay hidden away in his spiritual tower, though. In fact, he has been running for public office for decades. Frank found a campaign poster on his desk and asked, “Are you running for mayor?”
Mongo explained, “Oh absolutely, I run for mayor. Since 1978, I’ve been running for mayor.” However, he’s never won an election. Speaking directly to the American Pickers audience, he said, “I run for these offices and I have lost all of them.” He knows why he lost, too. “Because I don’t have any frills and lies and pretty suits and contamination.”
In another clip from the same episode, Prince Mongo reveals that Memphis drew him in because, deep down, Memphis desperately needs his leadership. However, he didn’t choose to come to Earth. The Zambodians sent him here on a mission.
