American Pickers star Danielle Colby spends part of her time away from the show as the dazzling Dannie Diesel. The 42-year-old has dabbled in burlesque for over 10 years now. It is an unusual path given her upbringing.

Colby spoke with Fox News about the hobby and how she ended up on the stage.

“The interesting thing is I grew up a Jehovah’s Witness and I had a very, very strict upbringing. So burlesque wasn’t something that was really around for me. I couldn’t be around it. It was new and taboo.”

There have been lessons along the way as well for the American Pickers star.

“It’s taught me a lot about ego, humanity, kindness, sharing. It also taught me a lot about what I don’t want to be and what I do want to be.”

When she explains her interest in burlesque, there is a lot of history that she appreciates and that reflects in what she picks on the show while out in the barns and dusty rooms of America. It has been a journey for her.

“The burlesque journey has really been an interesting one for me. It’s part of my life journey, my relationship with my body and my relationship with sexuality. It’s deep and it really started from a place of anxiety and depression. It really helped me blossom into a person who is less anxious and less depressed.”

Her aesthetic choices in the burlesque scene reflect the fashion and items that she tries to find while out on picks. Mike Wolfe has bikes, and Danielle Colby has turn of the century miniatures, clothes, and other items that she loves to collect.

How Mike Wolfe and Danielle Colby Met Before American Pickers

It was all the way back in 2000. Danielle Colby was picking a garage sale. There was a lamp there that intrigued her, but she thought she would just come back to it after looking at other items. Before she knew it, someone had taken the item from right under her nose. The man gave her a quick quip when she brought it up.

“Sorry girl, the time to buy it is when you see it,” Mike Wolfe said to the 21-year-old Colby. It left her annoyed, upset, and interested in this man who had taken this lamp. Wolfe had enough sass and charisma to make Colby immediately interested.

Ever since then, the two have been almost inseparable. Now, they go on picks, buy rare and exciting items around the country, and more. Just a random encounter that had a lasting impact on both of their lives. American Pickers wouldn’t be the same without it. Thank goodness for random garage sales and random meetings.
