On “American Pickers,” Danielle Colby is part of a very small group that scours the continental United States in search of unique antiques. However, the continental United States is not where the 45-year-old reality television star makes her home.

Colby calls Puerto Rico, which is a U.S. territory, home. She talked about why she chose to move to that Caribbean island during a recent appearance on “The Sailor Jerry” podcast.

“Um, so we moved here – we came, like a lot of people, after (Hurricane) Maria. Uh, we’re confused gringos trying to figure out how to help,” Colby said.

‘American Pickers’ Star Danielle Colby Said She Wanted a ‘Good Enough Reason’ to Move to Puerto Rico

It was her personal connections that motivated the “American Pickers” star to move to the island.

“We happened to have a lot of people here who we were already very close friends with, uh, because we had been coming to – between (the) Dominican (Republic) and Puerto Rico – for a while. And, um, you know, we always wanted to move here, but we always felt like, you know, it’s a cramped island. You know, like there’s a lot of people who want to move to this island. We wanted to make sure we had a good enough reason to uproot ourselves,” Colby also explained.

Danielle Colby has called Puerto Rico home for a few years now. And it’s an island where she feels at home.

“So, some friends of ours were very positive about us moving here. And we decided to go ahead and do it about three years ago. We had an apartment for like a couple of years before that that we would just come back and forth to. So, yeah, we (moved) about three years ago. And we just haven’t looked back, you know. We found our place. We found the people that we kind of just fit in with – the pieces of the community that love and appreciate us. And that we also love and appreciate,” she also said.

The “American Pickers” star said that moving to Puerto Rico “is one of the best decisions” she has made. However, living on an island does come with its share of challenges.

“But I will say, it’s incredibly hard to live on an island if you want to get s**t done. It’s hard because there’s a lot happening. There’s nature, there’s the weather. … We have the hurricanes and earthquakes and, you know, incredibly hot weather,” Danielle Colby explained. “We have all these kinds of things that happen – and social revolutions every once in a while.”

Unsurprisingly, the move to Puerto Rico has been a learning experience for Colby.

“The politics are different, you know. The whole history and structure is different. So, it’s been the last five years really unlearning a lot things we had learned before. And really kind of understanding the history of this island in a very different way than when we moved here and we thought we knew,” she also explained.
