Following Arnold Schwarzenegger’s recent rant from last week, the actor and politician has lost a sponsor for his annual bodybuilding competition.

Last week, the Hollywood star shared some controversial comments about the COVID-19 pandemic. Schwarzenegger called out Americans who are against wearing masks and don’t want to get the COVID-19 vaccine. He called citizens who don’t wear masks “schmucks.” Additionally, the former California governor addressed those that refuse to get the vaccine, saying “screw your freedom.”

On Friday, Fox News confirmed the lost sponsorship deal for his bodybuilding event. REDCON1, a sports nutrition brand, pulled out of the Arnold Classic due to his recent outburst. They will also not sponsor any other events he’s involved with going forward.

“To be clear we did not pull out of the event because of a mask issue,” a REDCON1 spokesperson told Fox News. “We understand the importance of public safety as well as the responsibilities of all event organizers. These are unprecedented times and we’re aligned with public safety for all. We elected to discontinue support due to Arnold’s comment, ‘Screw Your Freedoms.'”

“With the global influence Arnold personally possesses we find that ideology dangerous and anti-American,” the spokesperson added.

REDCON1 Founder Speaks Out Against Arnold Schwarzenegger

Aaron Singerman, REDCON1’s founder, also shared a statement on the situation. Singerman said on Instagram that he’s personally attended the Arnold Classic for the last 15 years. Further, his company has sponsored the annual event for the last decade.

He added that he looks at Arnold Schwarzenegger as a role model, and credits the actor for his initial interest in fitness. Singerman went on to explain why he pulled his company’s sponsorship from the event. In fact, REDCON1 is the exclusive sponsor of the Arnold Classic webcast. He said “with a heavy heart and some genuine sadness” REDCON1 is discontinuing their support for the event.

“We’ve spent hundreds of thousands of dollars as a top sponsor of the event,” Singerman said. “But we can’t in good conscience continue to support and be involved with someone who has such diametrically opposed beliefs.”

The Former California Governor’s Controversial Comments

The Terminator actor has never been one to shy away from having strong opinions. Yet Arnold Schwarzenegger’s recent outburst landed him in hot water with some who oppose his views. During an interview, he shared his thoughts for those that think “freedom” is more important than wearing masks amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

“People should know there is a virus here,” Schwarzenegger stated. “It kills people. And the only way we prevent it is to get vaccinated, wear masks, do social distancing. Washing your hands all the time, and not just to think about, ‘Well, my freedom is being kind of disturbed here.”

“No, screw your freedom, because with freedom comes obligations and responsibilities. We cannot just say, ‘I have the right to do X, Y and Z.’ When you infect other people, that is when it gets serious,” he added.

In addition to his comments, Schwarzenegger addressed the backlash in an op-ed for The Atlantic on August 13. He spoke about the criticism he received since making the comments earlier in the week. The actor turned politician admitted he went overboard a bit with his comments, but stood by his original point.

“I’ll admit, calling people schmucks and saying ‘Screw your freedom’ was a little much,” Schwarzenegger said.
