Earlier this year, Ashley Judd suffered a devastating leg injury while visiting Africa. The injury was followed by hours and hours of travel to get medical treatment.
The injury was so severe, according to her mother Naomi Judd, that Ashley’s life was in jeopardy.
“It was very serious — she could’ve died,” Naomi Judd told Kelly Clarkson in March. “She’s surviving. She’s very courageous. She can’t get out of bed [yet].”
Flash forward a month, and the actress is working hard to recover from what happened to her in Africa. And, on Saturday (April 24), Judd took to Instagram to share her progress, words of motivation, and photos of her gnarly scar. She also shared a video of her moving her injured leg.
Judd began her update post with a quote from C. Werden: “It is okay if you fall down and lose your spark. Just make sure when you get back up, you rise as a whole d*** fire.”
And, according to her Instagram post, Ashley Judd is working to do just that.
“I am getting back up. I remember when I began sleeping through the night. … remember when I began to have dreams again (both kinds),” she also shared.

In addition to being able to sleep, Ashley Judd also reported that she is gaining more and more mobility in her injured leg.
“With the kind of injury I (& many others) have, we speak of degrees. In the video, 109 degrees was an outrageous dream, & trying to reach it was agony,” she also said in her post. “… I made it because of the loving exhortation and validation of my many friends. Yesterday, I effortlessly reached the benchmark of 130 degrees.”
The actress also said she “can nearly reach” her knee and her “feet can rest almost parallel.” “The knee is coming along, the four fractures healing,” she added.
Even with the progress she has made, Judd still has a lot of work to do to physically recover. She said she expects it will take a year before her peroneal nerve to heal. However, she expects to be walking with a brace and cane in June. And, long term, she plans to go on other adventures, which is an inspiring message to others.
“But look out, Patagonia, because when that nerve heals, you’ll be seeing me. …” she also shared.

Ashley Judd suffered a bone-shattering leg injury while on a trip to the Democratic Republic of the Congo in February 2021. She was in Africa to view endangered bonobos. While she was in the jungle, she fell over a tree and severely broke her leg.
What followed was a 55-hour journey from the Democratic Republic of Congo to Johannesburg, South Africa. During this time, the actress previously shared, she had no pulse in her injured leg. After receiving medical treatment in Johannesburg, Ashley Judd later flew another 22 hours back to the United States.
Despite that scary experience in Africa, the actress said in the April 24th post that she plans to go back.
“Just as that little endangered bonobo knows that she’ll be seeing me back in the Congolese rain forest soon,” Judd also shared.
