Ashley Judd Offers Update on Extensive Damage to Her Leg: ‘Now Recovering From Surgery’

Popular actress Ashley Judd gave an update on social media for her fans and followers on her progress since suffering a severe leg injury.

Judd shattered her leg while on a trip to the Democratic Republic of Congo. And the injury happened in one of the worst possible places — the middle of the jungle. Judd was on an excursion researching the bonobos, an endangered species of apes. Judd’s Congolese “brothers and sisters” carried her from the jungle in a homemade hammock.

Afterward, she gave her thanks to the South African medical staff that cared for her.

“I want to give my deepest and most vulnerable thanks to Sunninghill Hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa, for making split second decisions upon my arrival,” Judd wrote on Instagram. “I arrived to them from DRC in terrible shape and my leg had no pulse and I desperately needed a blood transfusion. Their sisters (nurses) are exemplary, technically top notch, and they cared for the trauma in my body as well as my soul with equal proficiency. Pictured here, once I was stable, is carefree laughter and mirth,”

Alongside the caption of the post was a Boomerang video of the nursing staff.

“Dr Greef, pictured, was super at stabilizing my leg with the external fixator until the massive soft tissue damage and swelling went down so that I could have the Big Operation. What he did was significant and I am forever in his debt.  It must be noted I was being cared for during the Covid B.1.351 strain that is plaguing RSA. Sunninghill is world class and a wonder. Thank you to my trauma surgeon, anesthesiologist, head of nursing, hospital management – everyone.”

Father of Ashley Judd Stays by Her Side During Treatment

Ashley Judd goes on to reveal in her most recent post that her father was by her side. He made his way to South Africa to be there for his daughter during her initial treatment.

“My beloved Dad, who had gotten the text no parent ever wants: ’emergency, can’t answer questions, please come now,’ had indeed, because he is vaccinated, been able to come to South Africa,” Judd explains. “He has been my rock, companion, resource, helped me listen to so many doctors, critical support system, and kind, loving presence as I have wept and wept.”

However, Ashley Judd is now back in the states. Thankfully, she was able to undergo the procedure that would ultimately save her leg. At the conclusion of the post, the actress reveals that she is officially recovering from her surgery.
