Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis are bringing farmhouse style to the California coast.

The gorgeous property, which spans six acres, is the cover story of Architectural Digest’s June issue. Although the space is expansive, including the main house, guesthouse and entertainment barn, and barbecue pavilion — the couple stayed true to their values.

“We wanted a home, not an estate,” Kunis, the veteran actress, said of the home, which the pair calls KuKu Farms. “Building a house from the ground up is no small thing. This was either going to make us or break us.”

Her husband, 43-year-old Ashton Kutcher, added: “We wanted the house to look like an old barn, something that had been here for decades, that was then converted into a house. But it also had to feel modern and relevant.”

Although it was a tall order to complete, the Hollywood couple made their vision a reality.  The design consists of reclaimed wood, board-form concrete, and glass elements. Like many people, Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher utilized Pinterest boards to determine their visions for the home.

“When we looked at each other’s boards, 90 percent of the images we selected were the same, and most of the houses we pinned were designed by Howard,” Kutcher said, referring to their architect Howard Backen of the firm Backen & Gillam Architects.

After the power couple recruited Backen for the project, it took them five years to complete their dream home.

Additionally, there’s an intention behind the design. The property, while pleasing to look at, is also sustainable. The home gets its energy entirely from photovoltaics. Moreso, the family harvests their own food on the land. When stay-at-home orders were in place due to COVID-19, they planted a field of corn.

Yet, while the farm vibe is prevalent, it also includes a feeling of glam and lavishness. For example, the entertainment barn, completed in rustic wood, also features a massive crystal chandelier.

“We thought it would be funny to have this incredibly opulent thing hanging in a barn,” Kunis said of the piece. “It kind of takes the piss out of the property.”

More so, the couple worked tirelessly to make sure every detail of the home created a cohesive environment. “To feel tranquility in a space, everything needs to be in order,” Kutcher explained. “If the world around you isn’t in order, it’s hard to get your brain in order. When we’re in our home, the world just makes sense.”
