Ashton Kutcher is making his big return to film. And he needs a little help to do so. The actor is partnering with Reese Witherspoon on a new movie. For both Kutcher and Witherspoon, the romantic comedy space will feel right at home.
Kutcher’s new film will be for the streaming giant Netflix. The actor previously starred on the platform’s hit series “The Ranch” for four seasons. Kutcher’s and Witherspoon’s new film will be “Your Place or Mine.” And it’s rife with romantic comedy potential. Both Kutcher and Witherspoon will play two best friends living thousands of miles apart. But one week will change their lives forever.
It remains to be seen whether Kutcher’s and Witherspoon’s characters end up together in the film. Although both have been mainstays in the genre, neither actor has ever starred in a movie together. According to Deadline, the official synopsis for the movie is: “Two best friends who live on opposite coasts swap homes for a week and see their whole lives change.”
Aline Brosh McKenna of “The Devil Wears Prada” fame is writing and also directing the film. This will be her big directorial debut with “Your Place or Mine.”
Reese Witherspoon’s production company Hello Sunshine will produce the film. Meanwhile, Jason Bateman and Michael Costigan’s production company Aggregate Films will co-produce as well. This will be their first time partnering with Netflix. Currently, it is unknown when the film might enter production. Given the uncertainty of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the film may or may not experience future delays. Right now, Hollywood seems to be in a bit of a reshuffling.
But given Netflix is creating the film for its service, audiences probably won’t experience the same delays that have affected the industry’s biggest films so far.
Ashton Kutcher and ‘The Ranch’
Meanwhile, Ashton Kutcher is finally returning to people’s screens after an extended delay. This is the actor’s first project since starring on “The Ranch.” That series, also produced by Netflix, came to a close in 2020. The streaming giant chose to end the series with Season 4.
In the series, Kutcher played Colt Bennett, who had the distinction of having Sam Elliott as a father. The western star lent his cool baritones to Beau Bennett for four seasons. That series also reunited Kutcher with his “That ’70’s Show” co-star Danny Materson as well. But Materson ended up leaving the series after three seasons. In real life, he was accused of sexual assault allegations, terminating his time on the show.
“The Ranch” chose to kill off Materson’s character as a result. Instead, the sitcom brought in Dax Shepard to play a cousin of Kutcher’s character for the final season.
