‘Being the Ricardos’ Star Nicole Kidman Shows Off Short Hair in New ‘On Set’ Snap

Nicole Kidman is showing off her new red-headed look as she takes on the role of Lucille Ball for the upcoming Being the Ricardos.

She posted a photo to Instagram with her new hairdo.

Javier Bardem will play Desi Arnaz, and some set photos have already leaked showing what he’ll look like in the role. J.K. Simmons and Nina Arianda round out the main cast as William Frawley and Vivian Vance, respectively.

Aaron Sorkin, who wrote and is directing Being the Ricardos, said the film isn’t trying to recreate I Love Lucy. But will follow Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz as everything they’ve worked for hangs in the balance.

“The film takes place during a production week of I Love Lucy…,” Sorkin told Entertainment Tonight. “A Monday table read to Friday audience taping, with a whole bunch of long flashbacks which are telling the story that got us here… And because there’s a table read, there’s rehearsals and then there’s tape night… We do see moments of them being Lucy and Ricky Ricardo.”

Lucille Ball’s daughter, Lucie Arnaz, is a technical advisor for the film to help with accuracy.

Nicole Kidman Has A lot of Respect for Lucille Ball

In an interview with Chris Rock for Variety’s Actors on Actors, Nicole Kidman said she was thankful for the trail Ball blazed for women in Hollywood.

“She was a trailblazer,” Kidman said of Lucille Ball. “She formed her production company. Desi was Cuban, and she had to fight to get him on the show. They had just so many things in their marriage that are so relevant today, and what she was also dealing with in terms of everything that artists deal with, where you’re up against big corporations. And you’re like, ‘No, this is art.’”

Kidman has had to win over fans who wanted other actresses to get the part. Deborah Messing lobbied hard for the role, and many fans felt she would have made a better Lucille Ball.

But Lucie Arnaz signed off on Kidman playing her mother.

“We agreed to the inspired casting choice of Nicole Kidman because she is smart, a first-class, award-winning actress who can play comedy or drama and become anyone she puts her mind to and box office gold (important to big studios these days),” she wrote on Instagram. “She was cast to portray Lucille Ball. Not her fictional TV character, “Lucy Ricardo” and, take my word for it, Lucille Ball and “Lucy Ricardo” were quite different people.

Nicole Kidman said she wants to nail Lucille Ball’s comedy, but the focus of the movie is more about her troubled life off stage. And how she juggled the two extremes.

“Lucille Ball is hopefully funny,” she told Rock. “The strange thing about Lucille Ball is that everyone thinks we’re remaking the I Love Lucy show, and it’s so not that. It’s about Lucy and Desi and their relationship and their marriage. It’s very deep, actually.”
