‘Being the Ricardos’ Trailer Released: See Nicole Kidman Turn Into Lucille Ball

Earlier this year, we learned that Amazon was working on an I Love Lucy biopic. Since then, fans of the classic show have been waiting to see Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem transform into the classic TV power couple. The wait is finally over. Amazon released the first trailer for Being the Ricardos today. It looks like everything we could have wanted out of this movie. Check out the trailer below.

First off, we see that it’s not going to be a flowery love story about Lucy and Desi. Instead, the Being the Ricardos trailer shows that the movie will be an honest look at the couple. They faced some serious issues while creating their iconic and groundbreaking show. This film is going to give us a look at a week in their lives on the show.

We get glimpses of several scenes from the film. Additionally, the trailer shows how spot-on the casting was for Being the Ricardos. Nicole Kidman looks great as Lucille Ball. At the same time, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better Desi Arnaz than Javier Bardem. Fans of I Love Lucy had their doubts in the beginning. This first look at the film should do away with those.

When Amazon Studios shared the trailer they also shared the release date for Being the Ricardos. We won’t have to wait much longer at all. The movie comes out on December 21st on Prime Video.

More About the Being the Ricardos Trailer

The Being the Ricardos trailer opens with some shots of the studio. The set design department brought home the feeling of old-school Hollywood. More importantly, we get the hear Nicole Kidman speaking as Lucille Ball. In fact, her voiceover runs throughout the entire trailer. That shows us that Kidman doesn’t just look the part, she also nailed Ball’s voice.

What she says during the trailer hints at what Being the Ricardos is really about. “I am the biggest asset in the portfolio of Columbia Broadcasting System, I am the biggest asset in the portfolio of Phillip Morris Tobacco Westinghouse. I get paid a fortune to do exactly what I love doing.”

Then, the voiceover takes a slightly darker and more realistic tone. “All I have to do to keep it is kill 36 weeks a year. And then do it again the next year.”

They worked hard to build their empire. Additionally, the couple sacrificed so much to get to the top. In the end, their fame was one of the things that tore Lucy and Desi apart. Knowing this makes the last lines of the Being the Ricardos trailer hit hard. “I did this show so Desi and I could be together. I had no idea it was going to be a hit.” Her melancholy tone in the last sentence foreshadows the rough ride fans can expect from the movie.
