It’s about time! Brooke Smith, who Big Sky fans know as the riveting Merilee Legarski, has been nominated for “Best Actress” by the HCA!

“The nominees for Best Supporting Actress in a Broadcast Network or Cable Series, Drama are…” HCA announced on Twitter Thursday.

The time has come for The Hollywood Critics Association to name the best of the best, and fans of ABC’s Big Sky are rejoicing! The Thursday announcement sees longtime character actor Brooke Smith finally get the recognition she deserves with her nomination for “Best Actress”!

In addition, Yellowstone‘s Kelly Reilly is finally getting long-overdue awards recognition, as well. Audiences have long-awaited nominations for both Smith and Reilly, with the Beth Dutton actress receiving her first HCA nomination for “Best Actress” as well!

Each of these phenomenal actors has strong competition from elsewhere, too. The complete list of Hollywood Critics Association nominations for “Best Actress” are as follows:

‘Big Sky’s Brooke Smith Finally Recognized for Phenomenal Work

As we’ve said before, Outsider is sending huge props to Big Sky‘s Brooke Smith amidst her HCA nomination. To put it lightly, Smith is a phenomenal character actor who’s been in Hollywood for decades.

As Merilee Legarski in ABC’s hit drama, Big Sky, Smith appears in 8 of the 16 total episodes in Season 1. This is worth noting, however, because Smith was left out of the 2021 nominations for “Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series” by the Television Academy. Both Katheryn Winnick and Kylie Bunbury are up for “Best Leading Actress.”

Brooke Smith is no stranger to film, either, which makes her exclusion all the more baffling. In fact, her film and television catalogs are what most actors will only ever dream of. Her breakout role as kidnapping victim Catherine Martin in 1991’s Silence of the Lambs put her on the map decades ago. Since then, Smith has garnered acclaim in everything from Ray Donovan and Grey’s Anatomy to Bates Motel. Yet she has never been nominated for an Emmy by the Television Academy.

This year, the Big Sky actress took matters into her own hands. She began her own self-nomination campaign after years of being snubbed by the Emmys.

“I felt like this arc of this character had enough going on that I felt like I should push, that’s all,” Smith says of her decision. “It’s also that weird feeling of being, you know, you’re in a David Kelly show… So you feel like, OK, I’m with all the popular people, but I’m still somehow the freak.”

Strong words. David E. Kelley, the creator of Big Sky, however, doesn’t see Brooke Smith as a “freak” at all. Rather, he sees her as beyond worthy.

“As a show, you want to put your best foot forward and Brooke is certainly a part of that,” Kelley says. “She did incredible work for us. It was nuanced and complicated; she was driving drama one moment and dark comedy the next. Good acting is good acting and character actors are hard to find.”

Congratulations again, Brooke Smith! Well deserved, indeed!
