After a whirlwind of death, drama, and occasional romance in the ABC drama “Big Sky,” there’s no telling what’s in store for season two.

The show will premiere on September 30. A lot of the main cast is returning to the small town in Montana where a lot of big and outlandish crimes seem to take root.

Katheryn Winnick will return as Jenny Hoyt, the ex-cop with a now-dead husband. She works with Kylie Bunbury’s character Cassie Dewell. The two do private investigation work for Dewell & Hoyt. Other popular characters on the show that people either love or somehow love to despise, are making a grand re-entrance to “Big Sky.”

Ronald Pergman and his new crazy Bonnie-and-Clyde-style lover, Scarlet, will also return. Mark Lindor (Omar Metwally), the U.S. Marshal that helped Jenny and Cassie, is also now a season regular on the show.

Janina Gavankar Joining ‘Big Sky’

The show is following the concept of in with the new and out with the old. According to Deadline, Janina Gavankar has been announced as the first major cast addition for the second season of the show. She is known for past roles in “Sleepy Hollow, “The Mysteries of Laura,” “The Way Back,” “Invasion,” and “Borderlands.”

Gavankar is going to play Ren, a woman who is new to Helena. Cassie and Jenny are called to investigate a car wreck that is right outside of the town. Suddenly, they are swept into a grander mystery involving some “unsuspecting teens, a flirtatious face from Jenny’s past, and a vicious outsider hellbent on finding answers.”

Ren is the person coming to town looking for answers after her employee gets into a car wreck. As Deadline reported, “Now she must find out who betrayed her, but the more rocks she overturns, the more snakes she will discover. Ren’s moves are calculated and she strongly believes that it is best to keep your enemies close, which may spell bad news for Dewell & Hoyt.”

The Direction of Season Two

The second season of the show seems to be taking a drastic turn in a different direction. A lot of new characters will help with his shift. It will likely be similar to the second part of the first season. This was when “Big Sky” introduced the Kleinsasser family and all their evil, murderous ways.

The show balanced this new family plot as well as still following the Ronald Pergman case. Given the end of season one, Ronald and Scarlet will have to be a major focus and both are series regulars.

Spoiler alert, most of the Kleinsassers were killed off. Only the women, Margaret (played by Michelle Forbes) and Cheyenne (played by Britt Robertson) were left standing. Both of these characters will not be appearing in season two, meaning “Big Sky” has officially wrapped up that narrative.

In addition to swapping out storylines, the show is moving to film in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. “Big Sky” was previously filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia. Elwood Reid is also the new showrunner. He will also executive produce alongside David E. Kelley.

Clearly, there’s a lot of new crime and drama coming to the show, but the characters are also dragging along some baggage for season two.
