Last Years Billboard Music Awards
The 2020 Billboard Music Awards was held on October 14, 2020. The original date was scheduled for April 29 and was set at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. It was quickly postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“[In] accordance with the current guidelines set forth by national and local health officials and in order to ensure the health and safety of our artists, fans, guests and staff, we are postponing the Billboard Music Awards,” a statement read.
Kelly Clarkson hosted the event for the third year in a row. During the show, Garth Brooks received the Icon Award from Cher. Rapper Post Malone won the evening with nine awards. Furthermore, he was nominated in sixteen different categories.
What is the process behind selecting the nominees and winners for the BBMAs? They are based on key fan interactions calculated by Billboard and MRC Data. Album and song sales, streaming, radio airplay, touring, and social media engagement are all factors in the selection process.
Along with the typical awards, there are a handful of fan voted categories. Fans used TikTok, social media platforms, and the show’s official website to vote for their favorite artist or band. Last year’s three fan-voted categories included: the Billboard chart achievement award, top social artist, and top collaboration.
