In Blue Bloods, Abigail Hawk‘s character Abigail Baker is an important associate of Frank Reagan, but at the beginning of the show, she barely had anything at all.

Baker is a crucial character who gets to decide who and who doesn’t meet with Commissioner Frank Reagan. At the beginning of the series, Abigail was actually named Melissa and barely had a part to play. But all that changed thanks to Tom Selleck.

Abigail Baker Didn’t Even Have a Last Name in Season 1

“Originally, she did not have a last name. She did not have an age, she did not even have a gender, she did not have a race, she did not have an anything,” The Blue Bloods star explained to Starrymag earlier this year. “She was Either detective Mel or Melissa. So, no first name. Definitely not my first name.”

But Selleck wasn’t really having it. The Blue Bloods star realized a few episodes in just how devoid of detail Hawk’s character was, and made it his own personal mission to flesh her out.

“I got the role and about two to three episodes in Tom [Selleck] decided to change it to Abigail because he thought Melissa was too ordinary, which I guess is a compliment – so I’ll take it. Then he cleared with the lawyers the last name Baker. He obviously thought it was very important for me to have a last name since I was a person on the show. So, they gave me a full-fledged identity and that was all him,” she said.

That’s just one in a long line of acts of kindness Selleck has provided for his Blue Bloods co-stars and for those outside the entertainment industry. Selleck also participated and promoted a tip challenge to aid restaurant workers during the pandemic.

Tom Selleck and Abigail Hawk co-star alongside Donnie Wahlberg, Marisa Ramirez, Will Estes, Bridget Moynahan, Len Cariou, Vanessa Ray, and Sami Gayle. Selleck has voiced that he considers this cast like a “second family” and they enjoy shooting the family dinner scenes because they get to spend more time together.

Thankfully for Selleck, there are plenty of dinner scenes to shoot this year. Season 12 was officially renewed by CBS earlier in the year, and now, the cast is coming back to set.
