‘Blue Bloods’ Actor Tom Selleck is a Veteran: Which Military Branch Did He Serve In?

Prior to his fame today, “Blue Blood” star Tom Selleck attended the University of Southern California. There he discovered a knack for acting. His first big roles included “The Dating Game” and even a memorable Pepsi commercial.

However, Selleck didn’t his career acting, he served our country as well.

Unexpectedly, Selleck was drafted into the Vietnam War. His life quickly shifted from becoming a talented actor to fighting for the U.S. as a soldier. He decided to join the California National Guard in the 160th infantry regiment, serving from 1967 to 1973.

According to Military.com, the military left a strong impression on Selleck, who recalls his service with pride,

“I am a veteran, I’m proud of it,” he said. “I was a sergeant in the U.S. Army infantry, National Guard, Vietnam era. We’re all brothers and sisters in that sense.”

After his military stint, Selleck was dropped from his contract with Fox, after his military stint. Overall, he found the whole situation enlightening and saw the humor during his early acting career.

“And then I was going to be drafted, and I got into an infantry National Guard unit and did six months active duty in the middle of my time at Fox,” Tom Selleck said in Military.com. “I had my job when I came back, and then they fired me. [laughs]”

Nevertheless, Selleck continued to pursue acting despite losing the opportunity to work with Fox. Today he’s not only a success, he’s a household name.

It’s been over 50 years since Selleck served in the military. In an article from Military.com, he explains how much he appreciates the men and women who protect our country today.

“We learned a lesson as a country over time, that we need to welcome our troops home regardless of whether you have political problems with whatever mission they’re on, they just served and we need to thank them for it,” Selleck said.

In addition to volunteering for a several PSA announcements, Tom Selleck makes the National Guard’s contributions known across the U.S. He’s also a spokesperson for the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial Fund, and promotes the military.
