Blue Bloods fans were shocked when they learned Linda Reagan had died off-screen to open season 8, and so was the actress who played her.

Linda Reagan, who was the wife of Danny Reagan, played by Donnie Wahlberg, was on the show since the pilot of Blue Bloods. She was a beloved member of the Reagan family. And her actress Amy Carlson felt the character deserved better, she told Deadline.

“I feel badly that she dies the way she dies,” Carlson said. “I did not know they would do that, I was surprised.”

Carlson was planning to leave the show. But she assumed she’d come back at the beginning of season 8 to wrap up her character’s storyline. Or, at the very least, Blue Bloods would write her death so the audience could be a part of the moment. Instead, she dies in a helicopter crash off-screen.

“It would’ve been nice for the fans … to be a participant in it,” she explained. “I’m not sure how I would’ve chosen it but I just know that for the fans to have a way to grieve, to move through it, I think it would’ve been nice for them.”

Carlson on Exit

Bridget Moynahan, who plays Erin Reagan, blamed Carlson for the botched plotline. She told the Paley Center that Carlson’s decision to leave left the show “stuck” with that story arc, Entertainment Weekly said.

Carlson called her out on Twitter the next day.

But Carlson still seems friendly with her ex-work husband Donnie Wahlberg.

“He’s just been so generous and sweet,” she said. “I miss playing those scenes with him. We had a lot of fun.”

Oddly, her death is now being worked back into the show. Earlier this year, Luis Delgado (Lou Diamond Phillips), who is Danny Reagan’s nemesis, admitted to possibly having a had a hand in the crash, Distractify reported.

Not the First Controversial ‘Blue Bloods’ Exit

Jennifer Esposito played Detective Jackie Curatola, Danny Reagan’s partner for the first two seasons of the show. The character abruptly takes a leave of absence from the show in the third season, but that wasn’t the plan.

Esposito collapsed on the set of Blue Bloods after suffering from complications of Celiac disease.

CBS issued a statement to Deadline saying, “Jennifer has informed us that she is only available to work on a very limited part-time schedule. As a result, she’s unable to perform the demands of her role and we regretfully had to put her character on a leave of absence.”

Esposito said CBS had sidelined her and blocked her from working elsewhere because she was still under contract. She tweeted in part “It’s been almost two months without bringing me back to work + keeping Me from working anywhere else!… Absolutely shameful behavior.”

But again, she had nothing but good things to say about her time working with Wahlberg.

“We had so much fun,” she told PeopleTV. “I think they needed to make us separate because that’s how much fun we had. We would be cracking up and dancing like right before a take and then we’d be like, ‘So did he do it!’”

Blue Bloods brought in Marisa Ramirez to play Danny Reagan’s partner since.
