‘Blue Bloods’: Donnie Wahlberg Explained Why Tom Selleck ‘Really Is a Legend’ in ‘The Talk’ Interview

The “Blue Bloods” cast may be jam-packed with top-notch actors, but according to Donnie Wahlberg, few are as “legendary” as Tom Selleck.

Selleck stars as grizzled NYPD police commissioner Frank Reagan on the hit CBS crime drama. Wahlberg plays his oldest son, Detective Danny Reagan. The two have spent more than ten years together on screen, but Wahlberg continues to be impressed by Selleck’s skill.

In 2013, the “Blue Bloods” actor sat down with the hosts of the CBS talk show “The Talk.” At one point, they asked about Wahlberg’s directing role for an episode in season four.

“I’m a little nervous. I’m gonna be directing the first episode after Christmas break, and I’m not really nervous to do the directing. I am just nervous to direct Tom Selleck,” Wahlberg said. “He is one of very few icons around. When people use the word ‘legend,’ they always throw it around a little loosely. He really is a legend.”

Selleck has starred in more than 80 productions over the last few decades, many of them in titular or lead roles. He has a gravitas to his performance that’s unmatched by any other actor. And he has an absolutely iconic look. That same look was one of the most intimidating parts about working with him as a director, according to Wahlberg.

“To say action, or you know, the first time I say, ‘Hey, Tom, can you just, you know, try it this way? It might be a little bit better…’ You know when he gives me that ‘stare’ with those eyebrows,” the “Blue Bloods” star said, laughing. “People talk about his mustache, but forget the mustache. It’s the eyebrows that are so scary.”

How ‘Blue Bloods’ Star Tom Selleck Has the ‘Movie Star Look’

While Donnie Wahlberg might find Tom Selleck’s look to be a bit “scary,” fellow “Blue Bloods” actor Will Estes has a completely different take.

On “Blue Bloods,” Estes plays Sergeant Jamie Reagan, an NYPD cop who also happens to be police commissioner Frank Reagan’s youngest son. Estes and Selleck have now played the father-son duo for more than 10 years. But in the beginning, Estes looked up to the legendary Selleck in more ways than one.

Estes also sat down with “The Talk” in 2012, and one of the hosts asked him, “Don’t you find that when you are in a scene with him… when he walks into the room, you’re like, ‘Now that’s a star.’ He has this aura about him, it’s like, ‘Wow.’”

That “aura” the interviewer described is what Estes calls an ingrained “movie star look.”

“Some people look like movies stars completely on film,” Estes replied. “He looks like a movie star when he’s just standing in the room.”
