‘Blue Bloods’ Star Donnie Wahlberg Was Huge Fan of Classic Tom Selleck Film Before Working With Him

As of 2021, “Blue Bloods” stars Tom Selleck and Donnie Wahlberg have been working together for more than a decade. But even before they first appeared together on camera, Wahlberg already respected and admired Selleck.

In particular, Wahlberg was a huge fan of one of the many films Selleck made during his decades-long career. Wahlberg’s favorite Selleck movie was released years before they joined the cast of the popular CBS family cop drama. So, which film was it?

It wasn’t “Mr. Baseball,” and it wasn’t “Quigley Down Under.” Turns out, Wahlberg’s favorite Selleck film was the 1987 hit comedy, “Three Men and a Baby.” In it, Selleck plays the character of Peter. He is one of – you guessed it – three adult men put in charge of carrying for a baby. The other two men are the characters of Michael (played by Steve Guttenberg) and Jack (played by Ted Danson).

“Blue Bloods” star Donnie Wahlberg talked about his favorite Tom Selleck film – and his mother’s favorite Tom Selleck television role – during a 2010 interview with TV Tango.

“I was a huge fan of ‘Three Men and a Baby,’ and my mother was a huge fan of (Magnum, P.I.),” Wahlberg said. “She is in heaven right now and every Friday night she is watching this show. I can call her at 4 in the morning. And she will say, ‘Oh my God, I loved it when you made Tom laugh!’ She’s in heaven.”

Unsurprisingly, “Blue Bloods” actor Donnie Wahlberg has come to admire Tom Selleck.

“I really came to respect Tom later,” Wahlberg also said. “‘Three Men and a Baby’ was one of my favorite movies.”

‘Blue Bloods’ Star Donnie Wahlberg Shared More Words of Praise for His Television Co-Star Tom Selleck

In addition to sharing that his favorite Tom Selleck movie was “Three Men and a Baby,” Donnie Wahlberg had many other words of praise to share about his “Blue Bloods” co-star Tom Selleck.

“As Tom went on, I’ve seen him do different interviews and different things throughout the years. And I’ve gained a lot of respect for him,” Wahlberg also said. “To see how far he’s come and the level of success he’s had, it’s something that one can only aspire to.”

Wahlberg has also been impressed with Selleck for more than just his many famous acting roles.

“It’s one thing to have the success but then to have the humility after the success – it’s really what impresses me and it’s the life I try to live,” Donnie Wahlberg also said. “To see that you can actually do that and that there are good people like that who exist, it is very encouraging.”

In “Blue Bloods,” Tom Selleck plays New York City Police Commissioner Frank Reagan. Donnie Wahlberg plays Detective Danny Reagan. Danny is one of Frank’s sons who followed their father into a career in law enforcement.

The show’s 12th season is set to premiere on Oct. 1.
