“Blue Bloods” star Donnie Wahlberg doesn’t just make a splash on screen as the iconic Dany Reagan. He also excels as the lead singer of the boy band New Kids on the Block.
In a refreshing twist, Wahlberg brought his incredible singing skills to the forefront of his performance last night on the “Blue Bloods” Season 12 premiere. WARNING, spoilers ahead for the new season that premiered last night on Friday, Oct. 1!
So, yesterday’s premiere featured several ups and downs for our favorite New York crime-fighting family, according to PopCulture. For Wahlberg’s character Danny, he and his partner Baez (Marisa Ramirez) have to track down a killer who murdered a five-year-old boy. The tragic event really weighs on Danny, especially when few leads pop up to help them find the murderer.
Desperate, Danny turns to a psychic for help. Maggie Gibson (Callie Thorne) uses the little boy’s sock from the crime scene to search for answers to his death. She tells Danny to look into the boy’s father. Eventually, it comes to light that the boy’s biological father accidentally shot and killed him. The father was aiming for the boy’s stepfather but shot his own son instead.
While working with Maggie, Danny hears some unpleasant truths about himself that he doesn’t want to believe. She forces him to think about the last time he had fun with a woman outside of work. The “Blue Bloods” character admits it’s been a long time. But he agrees to go to a karaoke bar with Maggie to try and be more socially active.
It’s only at the very end of the episode that we get to hear Wahlberg sing. His “Blue Bloods” character surprises Maggie by getting up on stage to sing The Rolling Stones song “Start Me Up.” Though Wahlberg only sings the first few words of the song, it’s still incredible to hear his amazing voice on the show.
‘Blue Bloods’ Star Donnie Wahlberg Hypes Up His Performance on the Show
Before the “Blue Bloods” Season 12 premier dropped, Wahlberg took to Twitter to gear fans up for the show. He posted a photo of himself laughing with the word “Tonight!” written over it in large letters.
“T minus 30 minutes and counting til the return of, and the all-new season 12 premiere of, #BLUEBLOODS @BlueBloods_CBS 10/9c Only @cbstv,” Wahlberg captioned the post. Then he added in a tiny hint about his karaoke performance. “(ps — Danny Reagan may go a little Donnie Wahlberg tonight).”
It’s always nice to see the actors getting to infuse more of their personality into their performance of a specific character. I’m not sure if Danny Reagan ever sang in front of an audience before last night, but I’d love to see more of it in the future.
