‘Blue Bloods’: Donnie Wahlberg Reveals if He and Amy Carlson Are Friends After Her Departure From the Series in 2020 Interview

by Josh Lanier

Four years after Amy Carlson’s sudden and shocking death in Blue Bloods, fans and her fellow cast members are still making sense of it all. Mostly, her on-screen husband Donnie Wahlberg.

In the show, Linda Reagan dies off-screen in a helicopter explosion. Behind the scenes, Amy Carlson was planning on leaving the show, but she felt her character deserved better than to die like that. She blasted the show for not giving her a more proper exit. But despite her feud with the showrunner and producers, Carlson has a true love for Wahlberg.

“He’s just been so generous and sweet,” she told Deadline. “I miss playing those scenes with him. We had a lot of fun.”

Donnie Wahlberg also said he misses working with her. And he misses all of the potential Blue Bloods storylines that left with her.

“I’ve missed her in so many ways and, you know, I don’t know how we could ever bring her back,” he told Country Living. “Maybe we do a dream episode where Danny dreams she’s back, I don’t know. We miss her, we all miss her on the show and she’s still a good friend, and I’m lucky to have worked with her.”

But he said they stay in touch frequently.

“I reach out to her and we stay in touch,” he said. “Trust me, Danny Reagan is still upset and Donnie Wahlberg misses her tremendously.”

Blue Bloods Cast Loves Donnie Wahlberg

Amy Carlson is just the latest to share her love of working with Donnie Wahlberg.

Wahlberg told Entertainment Tonight that he and Tom Selleck are so close they call each other dad and son.

“I call him dad now, and he calls me son,” Wahlberg said in the interview. “I mean, that’s how we talk to each other off-camera. First, he used to kind of grumble at me, like… ‘This music guy’s kind of weird.’ And then now he calls me son. And he’ll come in and give me a big hug. You know, you get a hug out of Tom Selleck, that’s a big deal.”

Marisa Ramirez plays Wahlberg’s partner Detective Maria Baez on Blue Bloods. She said in a March 2021 interview with Dan Levine of Pop Culture she’s never had a working relationship like with the one she has with Wahlberg.

“But we’re at eight years and I think our relationship has evolved more this year,” Ramirez says of her Blue Bloods co-star. “I don’t know if it has to do with the pandemic. I don’t know if he’s being there for me with my many losses in the past year. But you can definitely look at each other and know what each other’s thinking and that’s…it’s such a, it’s such a beautiful thing.”

Even Jennifer Esposito, who played Danny Reagan’s first partner, and left Blue Bloods under difficult circumstances, praised Wahlberg.

“We had so much fun,” she told PeopleTV. “I think they needed to make us separate because that’s how much fun we had. We would be cracking up and dancing like right before a take and then we’d be like, ‘So did he do it!’”
