‘Blue Bloods’: Jamie Reagan Actor Will Estes Once Explained Why It’s Easier for Him to Play Cop Than Harvard Graduate

The character Jamie Reagan on “Blue Bloods” isn’t your typical New York Police Department officer. As fans of the show are aware, before he decided to follow his grandfather, father, and brothers into a career in law enforcement, Jamie trained to become an attorney at Harvard.

The actor who has brought Jamie Reagan to life on “Blue Bloods” since 2010 is Will Estes. He talked about what it was like playing an NYPD officer and Harvard graduate during a 2019 interview with LiveAbout.com. Interestingly, Estes said he preferred playing a cop to playing a Harvard graduate.

One factor that helps Estes and the other actors on the show who play police officers is what he referred to as a “technical adviser.”

His previous acting experience also helps Will Estes portray the youngest Reagan child on the popular CBS drama.

“We have a technical adviser from the NYPD,” the “Blue Bloods” actor said. “I’ve played military before, I played a marine, so that action kind of transfers over. I know the police force likes the marines.”

At the time of the interview, Estes was hoping to get to experience the work of the NYPD firsthand.

“The technical adviser gave me a huge packet on the NYPD,” he said. “Hopefully, I’ll get to do a ride-along and go into the precinct and spend some time with the guys.”

Thanks to the help of the technical advisor, Will Estes has been comfortable playing an NYPD officer. Playing a Harvard graduate, however, is a different story.

“People keep asking me what I’m going to do to study to be a cop, but I think it might be easier for me to play a cop than a Harvard graduate,” the actor said.

Estes also said that not just anyone can work for the NYPD.

“You have to have 60 college credits in order to join the New York police force or have been in the military,” he said.

Will Estes Once Revealed Why He Decided to Join the Cast of ‘Blue Bloods’

When a new television show hits the airwaves, it’s very difficult to predict if it will be a hit. So, it’s not surprising that some actors will be very selective in the projects they choose. For Will Estes, there was one factor that made him decide to take the role of Jamie Reagan on “Blue Bloods”

That factor – the script for the show’s pilot.

“It was probably my favorite script that I had read for a long time,” the “Blue Bloods” actor said. “…it was just a fantastic script. It all starts with the writing and the story. When the story is good everybody wants to be on board.”

It’s not all that surprising that the pilot script was solid. Two of the producers of “Blue Bloods” – Leonard Goldberg and Robin Green – had worked on the critically-acclaimed show “The Sopranos.”
