Tom Selleck without his mustache is like a bike without a chain—it just doesn’t work. However, in 2010, the producers Blue Bloods, the TV crime drama that follows a family immersed in the police community, wanted Selleck to shave his legendary mustache.
Obviously, though, the injustice never occurred. According to Looper, before Selleck rid himself of his facial fur, CBS executives stepped in and said the mustache stays.
The Legacy of the Blue Blood Star’s ‘Stache
Before his leading role in Blue Bloods, Tom Selleck and his lip foliage starred in many other shows in movies. The dynamic duo began making headlines once Selleck landed the role as in Magnum P.I. as the Hawaii-based private investigator, Magnum. After the show’s eight seasons, no one could picture Selleck without first seeing his mustache.
The Blue Bloods star even spoke about the impact of his mustache on his career in an interview in a CBS interview, BUILD Series. Selleck’s interview inquired about the moment when the actor realized that his mustache was here to stay.
“After Magnum, I think I went ‘Oh my gosh, I’m going to live with mustache questions the rest of my life,” Selleck shared.
However, Selleck doesn’t seem to be as tied to his mustache as his fans are. In fact, several other roles outside of Blue Bloods have asked him to shave it as well. This doesn’t seem to phase the actor, though.
“I was born without it, and I’m prepared to work without it. And I’ve done a ton of work without it,” Selleck said.
Selleck Shaves Half His ‘Stache on Late Night Show
Although Tom Selleck seems ready to part with his nose neighbor, the rest of us are still happy that it’s around.
Perhaps that’s why talk show host Conan O’Brien invited him on his show, Late Night with Conan O’Brien in 2004 to discuss his roles both with and without his facial hair. At the time, Selleck starred in the films, Ike: Countdown to D-Day, as General Dwight D. Eisenhower (without his mustache) and Reversible Errors as Larry Starczek (with his mustache).
In order to promote both projects, O’Brien claimed, the late-night talk show host invited Selleck to shave just half of his mustache. Suddenly, clippers and a mirror appeared from behind the desk.
Without much encouragement, Selleck took the clippers and hacked away at the left side of his lip.
“You know, you can sell those hairs on E-Bay,” the half-stached star joked.
As Selleck proceeded to promote his stache-less film, Ike: Countdown to D-Day, he turned to the right to expose the nude side of his face. Then he twisted the other way, mustache in view, to promote Reversible Errors.
The world might not be ready to see the Blue Bloods star without his mustache again, but Selleck has proven that he’s just as good an actor with or without a hairy lip.
