‘Blue Bloods’ Showrunner Shoots Down Major Potential Storyline for 2 Major Characters in Immediate Future

Ever since Jamie (Will Estes) and Eddie (Vanessa Ray) tied the knot, “Blue Bloods” fans have been wondering: Will they have a kid?

Adding a new family member would mark a major change for the couple. And the show’s producers aren’t sure they want to take things in that direction.

“We talk about it sometimes,” showrunner Kevin Wade told TV Insider this month. “I think that would be something that would come out of a combination of our fictional lives and their real lives.”

‘Blue Bloods’ Showrunner Says Not in the Near Future

In the immediate future, Wade said, fans shouldn’t expect any major changes to the couple’s family life. Their characters are too focused on their careers to start popping out offspring.

“For now, we’re just gonna play probably Jamie’s promotion,” Wade said. “If they said this show’s going to run for six more years, I’m guessing that Jamie may well be in 1PP before it was over. Not necessarily as commissioner, but he seems like the guy who’s on his way up on that side of things.”

Meanwhile, Eddie could be in for a promotion of her own. Wade said that Ray really shines playing undercover scenes. So “Blue Bloods” fans should be on the lookout for more of those.

“We played an episode late in the season where she went undercover with Anthony [Steven Schirripa] to try to nab a crooked parole officer,” the showrunner said. “Every time we’ve played her undercover, it brightens up the screen. It’s on the table that Eddie could become a detective.”

Another Romance Between Partners? Not Likely

Just as producers aren’t pushing to make major changes to Jamie and Eddie’s relationship, Wade said they aren’t looking to take Danny’s (Donnie Wahlberg) relationship with his partner Maria (Marisa Ramirez) to the next level.

Sure, the two actors get along well, both in terms of their onscreen chemistry and their rapport on the set. But Wade doesn’t see a potential romance working out well for the characters or the actors. For one thing, one of them would have to leave if the relationship fizzled.

“I’m gonna use Sam and Diane from ‘Cheers’ and really age myself here,” he told TV Insider. “But once it happens, there’s nowhere to go. There really aren’t stories in happy couples and there are definitely not stories in police detectives on the job having a personal relationship with their partner.”

It seems Wade and his colleagues aren’t wild about change. And with the “Blue Bloods” Season 11 finale topping Friday night ratings, one can see why they wouldn’t want to shake things up. Still, with another season of “Blue Bloods” on the way, you can bet they’ll have a few plot twists up their sleeves.
