“Blue Bloods” star Donnie Wahlberg keeps a busy schedule. Between filming the crime drama, appearing on his reality show “Wahlburgers,” and creating new music, he barely gets a moment to himself. Fortunately, Wahlberg has the perfect travel companion in his French Bulldog – Lumpy.

In a 2018 interview with Pet Lifestyles Magazine, Wahlberg revealed all on his 10-year-old friendship with his furry best pal. Wahlberg can thank his son Elijah for convincing him he needed a dog to keep him company. Elijah worried about his father getting lonely and convinced him a French Bulldog was the dog for him.

“Elijah had been with me for the Summer and he was heading back to school soon,” Wahlberg said. “He knew I’d be lonely when he left, so he said ‘Dad, you need a dog.’ He literally did Dogs 101 on YouTube until he found the right dog for me.”

Cue the song “Best Friend” by Harry Nilsson. Because Wahlberg and Lumpy have been inseparable for the past decade. The dog goes everywhere Walhberg goes, riding on both private and commercial planes alike. He’s even become an honorary member of New Kids on the Block, bringing a little bark to Wahlberg’s music.

Donnie Wahlberg Reflects on His Best Friend

So why Lumpy? Well, Donnie Wahlberg thought the puppy looked like a lump when he first saw him. And Wahlberg’s son decided the name would appropriate. The “Blue Bloods” star reflected on the first time he held Lumpy and how he felt like a proud parent.

“He was this little life in my hands. Little but a big responsibility. It took me a minute and I felt the responsibility keenly but I took him on, I cared for him carrying him when he was too little to go down the stairs, training him, nurturing him, I felt well, like a parent,” Wahlberg said.

And the memories kept coming for the past decade. Wahlberg has taken the pooch on the road with him and even up on stage during concerts. Lumpy loves posing with fans almost as much as he loves sunbathing and playing outside of Wahlberg’s vacation home. The actor admitted he had trouble getting the dog to come inside at times. As far as his favorite memory, there’s plenty.

“The way the kids love how he greets them. The first time I took him home to meet my wife. Sharing the first snowstorm,” Wahlberg said. But as with any pet owner, Wahlberg knows his time with Lumpy is limited. So he wants to give him the best life he can. “I can’t look at him like an old man.”
