Donnie Wahlberg’s Work on Hit CBS Series ‘Blue Bloods’

Donnie Wahlberg has been starring in the police procedural drama series Blue Bloods since September 2010. Blue Bloods follows the lives of the NYPD’s “First Family of Law Enforcement,” which are the Reagans. The oldest son, Danny (played by Donnie) is an NYPD detective. Youngest son Jamie is an NYPD sergeant. The daughter Erin works as an assistant district attorney. The show’s synopsis reads, “The story of a classic Irish Catholic New York family with family throughout the justice system of New York.” Blue Bloods notably films in New York City and also references nearby suburbs.

While speaking about his role in the series, Donnie admits the first dinner without Amy Carlson, who played his on-screen wife, Linda, that dies in a helicopter crash, was really emotional and intimidating. “My character basically had to run roughshod over the table,” he explains.

Donnie adds, “My dad used to wear a mustache a lot, and he’s very intimidating and he sat at the head of the table like that. It was sort of traumatizing for me to sit there and have to come in on my first day of shooting the series and just basically take over the dinner table.”

Donnie Wahlberg mentions one thing he would change about his Blue Bloods character. “There’s a lot of humor in law enforcement, to get through some of the hard times,” Wahlberg explains in a 2019 interview with CBS. “I would write him a few more jokes!”

Besides his acting work, Donnie Wahlberg is known for his music career as a member of “New Kids on the Block.” Donnie also stars in various films, including Saw II and The Sixth Sense. His family had a reality TV series Wahlburgers, which was filmed in Wahlberg’s hometown, Boston.

Blue Bloods Is Returning For a Twelfth Season

In April 2021, CBS renewed the hit series for its twelfth season. Donnie Wahlberg is rejoining Tom Selleck on the show’s set this summer. Others expected to return include Bridget Moynahan, Len Cariou, and Will Estes. Moynahan plays Assistant District Attorney Erin Reagan, Cariou plays retired NYPD Commissioner Henry Reagan, and Estes plays Sergeant Jamie Reagan.
