‘Blue Bloods’ Star Tom Selleck Once Detailed the Best Advice He Could Give His 25-Year-Old Self

Everyone wishes they could go back in time and talk to their younger self. Even “Blue Bloods” star Tom Selleck wondered what he would tell himself.

Tom Selleck at 25-years-old was a very different man than he is at 76-years-old. For one, Selleck was just at the start of his career at 25. He was trying to break into the acting genre and struggling with unemployment as he pursued his dream. At 70, Selleck was starring on “Blue Bloods” and had already experienced major successes with “Magnum P.I.” and “Three Men and a Baby.”

So what wisdom would Selleck impart to his 25-year-old self? In a 2014 interview with GQ, Selleck reflected on his younger days.

“Look, I don’t think I was that mature,” Selleck told the outlet. “I don’t think I had a kind of worldview, or I don’t think—and maybe I should have—I don’t think I really stepped out of myself and realized where I was, even at 25. At 25, I was getting by. It was either unemployment or television commercials, but I was doing a little better every year, and learning. But I never… I’ve always kind of just, even in success—some rather phenomenal success—that you just move on to the next thing.”

Tom Selleck on His Early Career

Tom Selleck continued, believing that his younger self couldn’t handle all the knowledge that his present self had. He believed that he was a little ignorant at 25 and wished that he savored moments more than he did.

“If I told him anything, I’d tell him, ‘Just be aware of what’s going on. You only get here once. And maybe savor things, even the failures, a little more,’” Selleck continued. “But I don’t know whether at 25 most people are blessed with that historical perspective you have when you’re about to turn 70. And I’m not sure that would be a good thing at 25, because you can freak yourself out.”

In 1980, Selleck ended up starring in one of his most iconic roles as Thomas Magnum. “Magnum P.I.” ended up being a hit with viewers, propelling Selleck into stardom. The actor donned the signature Hawaiian shirt, playing a private investigator in a tropical paradise. With his signature mustache, Selleck became a bit of a sex symbol for the role.

“Magnum P.I.” ended up lasting eight seasons on the air and influencing countless other crime dramas that followed. And Selleck has had a successful career in the years since. Viewers can catch him on “Blue Bloods.”
