Dolly Parton and Tom Selleck — it really is a dynamic duo we never knew we needed, but it’s so nice and entertaining to have.
As we all know, Dolly Parton is a societal powerhouse. Not only is she a popular, record-breaking singer-songwriter, but she’s also a TV personality, the owner of a charity, an entrepreneur, and an actress. She just happens to be one of the most universally beloved members of society.
Back in 1987 and 1988, Parton had her own variety show called “Dolly.” Some of her guests were popular artists like Tammy Wynette, Merle Haggard, Emmylou Harris, Tom Petty, The Neville Brothers, and Tyne Daly. However, her connections stretched beyond music as well.
She happened to have people like Bruce Willis, Oprah Winfrey, and “Blue Bloods” star Tom Selleck on the show as well. At the time Selleck was on the very popular show “Magnum, P.I.” This was his breakout role in the industry. He was known for his hearty mustache, Hawaiian-style shirts, Detroit Tigers baseball hat, and a handgun at his hip.

Dolly Parton invited him to the show where the duo talked and flirted. Parton shares that she was in Hawaii at the time. Selleck lent her something during her stay.
“You needed a mobile dressing room, so, being the gentleman that I am, I loaned you mine,” Selleck said. To which Parton responded, “Yes you did and I drove it all over Hawaii. That was nice of you, thank you.”
Tom Selleck proceeded to jokingly pull out a raunchy outfit and claim she left it in the dressing room. Parton laughed off the joke, but proceeded to joke around with the TV star.
“I just want you to know though that the next time you’re in Hollywood doing something, you can use my dressing room … But, there’s only one catch. I’m going to be in it,” Parton said.
Dolly Parton has a way of talking and interacting with just about anyone. She joked at the beginning of the show that people wouldn’t recognize him because, at the time, everyone was so used to seeing him in his shorts from “Magnum, P.I.”
She jokingly told him to take them off. Parton said, “You’re easily embarrassed, look at your face. I was only kidding.”
Dolly Parton has had no shortage of TV and film appearances. Her IMDb page is longer than a lot of actors that have been around since Parton. As for Tom Selleck, his time on “Magnum, P.I.” would soon be coming to an end around the time he was on “Dolly.”
In 1987, he starred in “Three Men and a Baby,” which dominated the American box office at the time. His big comeback to TV was the lead role in CBS’ “The Closer.”
