Since 2010, “Blue Bloods” has been portraying a New York City police family from the perspectives of multiple generations. And where some police dramas don’t hesitate to take liberties for the sake of entertainment, the hit CBS show has gone to great lengths to maintain an aspect of realism to the depiction. Few know that better than Will Estes, who plays the part of beat cop-turned-sergeant Jamie Reagan on the show.

“Blue Bloods” revolves around the Reagan family. From Tom Selleck’s Frank Reagan, the NYPD Commissioner, to Bridget Moynahan’s Erin Reagan, who plays the assistant DA, the show runs the whole gamut of the law enforcement process. Naturally, there are a lot of moving parts involved. Law and order in the United States is a complex field. And any show trying to depict it realistically would be lost without the help of someone who knows it like the back of their hand.

For “Blue Bloods,” that guy is Jim Nuciforo. He is a retired NYPD detective. And he has plenty of real-life experience to inform the way the show depicts police work. He also appears as a member of Frank Reagan’s security team in more than 20 episodes of the show.

“You know, I don’t think it’s ‘Blue Bloods’ without Jim, really. And so, we’ve relied on him and his experience. And he obviously draws from a wealth of his own experience, and other people that he brings in. I’m sure he calls people sometimes for certain specific things,” Will Estes told PopCulture in an interview from 2020. “But for me, he’s the guy. It all comes through him. He’s the conduit for us trying to tell the truth about the job.”

Will Estes’ Character Has Grown Throughout the Course of ‘Blue Bloods’

When a drama runs for as long as “Blue Bloods,” the characters in the show are bound to change. Of course, the bigger differences will come in younger characters, who see more change in their lives.

In “Blue Bloods,” few characters have experienced more growth than Will Estes’ Jamie Reagan. Just like a real police officer, Jamie Reagan begins at the ground level as a beat cop. He enjoyed the work, but it’s not a position one holds forever. After a while, he was promoted to sergeant.

And beyond the surface level changes, Will Estes himself feels that his character has gone from a boy to a man over the years. In his relative youth, he was a naive kid who had given up a promising career in law for police work. At present, Jamie Reagan is a seasoned, capable veteran who is now married to his longtime partner Eddie Janko, played by Vanessa Ray.

The “Blue Bloods” cast has had the good fortune of playing out their characters’ lives for more than a decade. Here’s to hoping for some more good years of the show.
