Will Estes, who plays Jamie Reagan on the CBS hit series Blue Bloods was a big fan of the show before he even auditioned. Estes has wowed audiences with his performance as one of the Reagan family’s most prominent members.

But things weren’t always easy for him. He not only wanted the part because he loved the script, but he was also “totally broke” before getting the part.

“I auditioned for what felt like 11 times, but it was actually just four. I remember the script was my favorite thing I’d read all year,” he said in a CBS Watch! feature story. I don’t think I ever told anyone this, but I was totally broke. After reading with Leonard [Goldberg], I remember he said, “I believed you.” That was an endearing vote of confidence.”

Goldberg is an executive producer for the show, so getting a stamp of approval must have been quite a huge deal at the time. And thankfully for Estes, the work he put in at all of those auditions paid off, and he landed the role and got to work alongside entertainment industry names like Tom Selleck.

Members of The ‘Blue Bloods’ Cast Really Admire Tom Selleck

Blue Bloods also stars Tom Selleck, Donnie Whalberg, Sami Gayle, and Bridget Moynahan. Selleck is well known not only for his impressive resume but his good looks. According to Estes, the man always looks like a movie star.

“When he walks into the room, you’re like, ‘Now that’s a star.’ He has this aura about him, it’s like, ‘Wow,’” Estes told The Talk in 2012. Thankfully, Selleck’s intimidating aura hasn’t stopped the cast from bonding. In fact, Selleck himself considers the Blue Bloods cast like a second family.

Still, the cast can’t help but find themselves star-struck. Before Donnie Whalberg directed his first episode, he admitted he was nervous in a 2013 interview with The Talk.

“I’m a little nervous. I’m gonna be directing the first episode after Christmas break, and I’m not really nervous to do the directing. I am just nervous to direct Tom Selleck,” Wahlberg admitted. “He is one of very few icons around. When people use the word ‘legend,’ they always throw it around a little loosely. He really is a legend.

Selleck and Whalberg have a playful relationship. While Wahlberg has joked that Selleck didn’t like him at first, Selleck now playfully calls Whalberg “son.” Whalberg plays one of Selleck’s sons on Blue Bloods.

Selleck’s work has Frank Reagan surely has been impressive, and it’ll definitely be worth a watch when the show finally returns this fall. Blue Bloods will premiere on October 1st this year. It’s a part of CBS’s impressive lineup of competitively rated dramas. Other shows coming to CBS include those in the FBI and NCIS franchises.
