Conan O’Brien once talked Tom Selleck into shaving off one-half of his mustache live on-air in 2004 as a way to help his audience better understand Selleck’s two upcoming movies.

Selleck was on Late Night promoting two TV movies. One was a biography of Dwight D. Eisenhower called Ike: Countdown to D-Day, which follows the Allied commander in the lead-up to the largest military invasion in modern history. And Selleck was also promoting a legal thriller movie called Reversible Errors. Conan jokingly says that it may confuse viewers since in one movie, (Ike) Selleck is sans ‘stache. But in the other, he rocks his whiskers as well as ever.

O’Brien joked to help out his viewers, Tom Selleck should shave half of his mustache off.

“I thought what we could do is make things a little simpler and compromise to promote both projects,” O’Brien said. “Would you be willing to shave off half your mustache?”

Not only was Selleck completely game for this, he started right away. O’Brien even held the mirror for him. Hilariously, though, the clippers weren’t very good. So, what should have taken 30 seconds ended up with Conan and Tom Selleck, inches from each other, as he works away on the left side of his mustache for more than a minute.

Once he was finished, Selleck joked that Conan should “sell those hairs on eBay.”

For the rest of the interview, Selleck would change sides depending on what movie he was promoting at that moment.

Tom Selleck Say One Celeb Has a Better Mustache

Tom Selleck appeared on the Rich Eisen Show, where the poll question was who had the best TV mustache ever. Selleck was asked to rank who had the greatest soup-strainer in Hollywood.

His options were Alex Trebek in the 1980s and 1990s, Isaac Washington from The Love Boat, Ned Flanders from The Simpsons, or himself.

Tom Selleck wasn’t exactly pleased with the topic, as he said his mustache comes up in every interview he does.

“I don’t get through an interview without a mustache question. I don’t need a mustache, I was born without it,” Selleck said.

But Selleck wasn’t selfish. He was able to admit defeat to the trivia king Alex Trebek, who wore a pretty amazing chevron mustache for some 20 years. In fact, when he shaved it in 2001, it caused a media circus. Something that Trebek he hated, he once told a journalist.

“And it got so much press, I couldn’t believe it,” he told the New Republic in 2014. “The wars with Iraq or whatever at that time, and people are all in a stew over my mustache. I have one response: Get a life.”
