‘Blue Bloods’: Tom Selleck Stressed Importance of Reagan Family Not ‘Pulling Punches’ with Each Other

On the hit CBS family cop drama “Blue Bloods” the Reagan family shares an incredibly strong bond. They are bonded by their family ties, as well as the ties they share because of their shared profession.

If you have never watched the show it follows a New York City family that is dedicated to law enforcement. The patriarch, Henry Reagan (played by Len Cariou), was a New York City Police officer who later began police commissioner. By the time the show catches up to the Reagan family, Henry is retired.

The police commissioner in the show when it caught up to the Reagan family is Henry’s son, Frank Reagan (played by Tom Selleck) on “Blue Bloods.”

As the police commissioner, Frank carries an incredible weight on his shoulders. He is the man in charge of the 35,000 members of the New York City Police Department. He handles this while also making time for his beloved children.

They are detective Danny Reagan (played by Donnie Wahlberg), attorney Erin Reagan (played by Bridget Moynahan), and officer Jamie Reagan (played by Will Estes). Each of these children brings their own perspectives to the issues they face on the show.

Reagan Family Members Have Had Their Share of Conflicts in ‘Blue Bloods’

As much as the members of the Reagan family love and respect one another, they have had their share of conflicts over the show’s 12 seasons. They have argued over many things over the years – both in their personal lives and in their professional careers.

“Blue Bloods” star Tom Selleck talked about the conflicts between the members of the Reagan family during a 2016 interview with the SAG-AFTRA Foundation. And, according to Selleck, the show lets the perspectives of each of the family members come to light. They do this even if an opinion might not be popular.

“It’s a police family. They don’t – we don’t – pull punches on, on their opinions,” Selleck said. “We don’t try to water them down to make it acceptable to everybody. Although, I think they’re pretty reasonable people.”

According to the “Blue Bloods” star, the show makes an effort to offer different points of view on topics.

“But at the same time, we work very hard – you don’t see Frank’s adversaries who disagree with him as written so that everything is set up for Frank so that he can always win,” Selleck said. “We try very hard to provide strong characters who present their points of view in very strong ways. And that’s, I think, how you get balance.”

You can watch Tom Selleck talk about his hit show “Blue Bloods” below. His comments about how the Reagan family characters don’t pull punches with one another begin around the 16:45 mark of the interview.
