After she was cast in the role of Eddie Janko in “Blue Bloods,” actress Vanessa Ray had to undergo training in order to portray her character as realistically as possible. And, because Eddie Janko is an officer of the New York City police department, that training involved learning how to handle a gun.
She talked about how she prepared for her role in the series during a 2018 interview with Long Island Weekly. As part of this training, a “Blue Bloods” producer took Ray and other actors from the show under his wing. That producer was James Niciforo. He taught them how to handle a gun. Those other actors were Will Estes, who plays officer Jamie Reagan, and Marisa Ramirez, who plays Detective Maria Baez.
“Our producer, James Niciforo, who is the unsung hero of our show, took Marisa (Ramirez), Will (Estes) and I to a shooting range,” Ray said.
This training proved to be very helpful for Ray. The “Blue Bloods” actress said she was not familiar with guns prior to joining the show.
“It was the first time I ever shot a gun since I didn’t really grow up with guns,” Vanessa Ray also said.
Vanessa Ray Said She Also Did ‘SWAT-Type’ Training for Show
Gun training wasn’t the only work Ray did to prepare to play Eddie Janko in “Blue Bloods.”
“I also did some SWAT-type training and learned how to clear a room,” Ray also said.
Thanks to her training and time on “Blue Bloods,” Ray has come to a better understanding of what it takes to be a police officer.
“I have so much respect for police officers with the amount of gear that they’re wearing on a day-to-day basis and being in such great physical shape,” Ray said.
According to IMDb, the 40-year-old actress joined the cast of “Blue Bloods” in 2013. The show began its tenure on CBS during 2010.
Vanessa Ray Talked About Her Character’s Relationship with Jamie in “Blue Bloods”
One of the major storylines for Eddie Janko, Vanessa Ray’s character in “Blue Bloods,” is Eddie’s relationship with Jamie Reagan. Jamie and Eddie began their relationship as partners in the NYPD. The characters eventually married and Eddie became a new member of the Reagan family.
Like most relationships, the one between Eddie and Jamie has been complicated at times. This hasn’t gone unnoticed by the actress.
“I think it’s really complicated, with myself included, as a fan of this couple,” Ray also said in 2018. “There’s a lot of learning curves and (a) lot of figuring out what their relationship looks like.”
Ray has also been surprised at just how difficult things have been for Eddie and Jamie on “Blue Bloods.”
“I think it’s more of a struggle than they were anticipating. … It’s a lot harder for them than I think we all thought,” Ray shared. “They’ve loved each other for all these years, they’re finally together and now the fun begins, but it’s sort of where the real work has begun for them in terms of their relationship instead of their actual work and family unit.”
