Donnie Wahlberg brings a lot to playing Detective Danny Reagan on the CBS crime drama “Blue Bloods.” But it also gives him something, too.

In a 2010 interview with Daily Actor, Wahlberg, who was just starting to play Reagan at this time in the show’s first season, talks about his favorite part of the role.

“I think the freedom that I have with him,” Wahlberg, who first gained recognition with “New Kids on the Block,” said. “I think a great day playing Danny is when I remember to be free and try something different every day.

‘Blue Bloods’ Star Likes Making New Discoveries Within Context Of Script

“Sometimes things are written a certain way that they kind of guide an actor down a certain road,” he says. “And my favorite days are the days that even though I’m being guided by the script down a certain road, I’m still able to make discoveries and try things that are completely free and off the cuff.”

Wahlberg talks about a situation where on the “Blue Bloods” set he “kind of did like a quasi Colombo moment and it was really fun and it didn’t feel false.”

He says the moment “felt within the realm of Danny and it’s what attracted me to this role.

“There were a few other opportunities for me to work in other shows and do other things but this part…,” Wahlberg says. “Besides the fact that I love the cast, I love Tom [Selleck], and I loved the pilot script, I really loved the freedom that this character presented for me as an actor.”

Wahlberg, Selleck Among Cast Members Set To Return This Fall On CBS

Wahlberg has been a part of “Blue Bloods” since 2010 and will be back when the show returns for its 12th season in the fall on CBS. Selleck, obviously, plays NYPD Commissioner Frank Reagan. He’s also a bit of a guiding force among the show’s cast, too. It is quite apparent that Wahlberg has a lot of love and respect for his co-star.

By the way, Wahlberg, Selleck, Will Estes [Sergeant Jamie Reagan], Bridget Moynahan [Assistant District Attorney Erin Reagan], and Len Cariou [Retired NYPD Commissioner Henry Reagan] are the only cast members who have been on the show all 11 seasons.

Yes, they all will be back when “Blue Bloods” starts dealing with new cases this fall.

Another thing longtime fans will also plan on seeing more of is the popular dinner table scenes. It’s one of the times where the Reagan family comes together. They either dish out humor or settle serious matters.

It’s not surprising to see the wise, older Henry sharing something with a Reagan youngster. Of course, Frank sits at the head of the table. You bet you will see him, at some point in the 12th season, give a few words of wisdom, too.
