Years before she became famous for her portrayal of Detective Maria Baez in “Blue Bloods,” actress Marisa Ramirez had to independently work to make a name for herself.
The 43-year-old star talked about her early life and career during a 2011 interview with Club Planet. At the time, she was appearing alongside Lucy Lawless in the Starz series, “Spartacus: Gods of the Arena.” Ramirez did not join the cast of “Blue Bloods” until 2013, according to IMDb.
Ramirez was born on Sept. 15, 1977. And, her acting career goes all the way back to the late 1990s. One person who played a small role in getting her career off and running was her mother. This early foray into acting did not go very smoothly at all.
“I am Mexican, American Indian, and Irish,” Ramirez said. “I was born and raised in East LA. … was shy, but my mom took me to an audition at age five. … freaked out. (And) didn’t want any part of it at all.”

According to what future “Blue Bloods” star Marisa Ramirez shared in 2011, she eventually overcame her shyness. And just before she became a teenager, she was given an opportunity to work as a model.
“When I was 12 somebody approached me in the mall and said I should model and gave me their card. Since then, I began working as a model,” the Maria Baez actress also shared.
However, a few years after this modeling opportunity, the “Blue Bloods” actress had to make her way in the entertainment world pretty much alone. Her mother decided that she was no longer going to help her daughter along the path to her making her acting dreams come true. And, Marisa Ramirez must have a lot of resilience inside her. Because she decided that she would do what she had to do to be a successful entertainer.
“My mom took me to castings, but when I turned 15 she said, ‘Here’s the map and car. Drive yourself to your own things. I’m not doing it anymore,'” the “Blue Bloods” star recalled. “So I did.”

Years before she began playing Detective Maria Baez on “Blue Bloods,” actress Marisa Ramirez added many other credits to her filmography. For example, she appeared as the character of Gia Campbell in more than 100 episodes of “General Hospital.”
Ramirez also appeared in another soap opera before her time on “Blue Bloods.” This series was “The Young and the Restless.” In it, she appeared as the characters Carmen Mesta and Ines Vargas” in more than 70 episodes.
Ramirez also made appearances in such shows as “Roswell,” “CSI: Miami,” “Miracles,” “Supernatural,” “Mental,” “The Mentalist,” and “Body of Proof.”
