“Blue Bloods” star Tom Selleck is proud of his work on “Magnum P.I.” And that includes his wardrobe.

The TV and movie star told Entertainment Tonight that he gets a lot of comments on the short shorts he used to parade around in on “Magnum P.I.” That was just the style then. But Selleck said that’s how shorts are supposed to look.

“I know my shorts were too short,” Selleck conceded. “Everybody tells me.”

Still, Selleck insisted that’s how shorts should look. And he took a shot at more recent fashions.

“They were shorts, like shorts are supposed to be,” he added. “Now shorts are like pajamas.”

‘Blue Bloods’ Was Recently Renewed for Season 12

This April, CBS announced that it was renewing “Blue Bloods” for a twelfth season. But for awhile there, the cast and crew feared they were filming the series finale when they set out to wrap up Season 11.

“We were told pretty early on, I think before Thanksgiving, that our season finale would be the last two episodes and would air back to back,” showrunner Kevin Wade told Deadline recently. “Which I immediately took as they’re planning to wrap up the series. So I started to think about how do we do something that could serve as a season finale but also if need be as a series finale.”

The two-hour Season 11 finale featured the return of Commissioner Frank Reagan’s (Selleck) grandson Joe Hill (Will Hochman). According to Wade, they briefly considered killing off Hill, but ultimately decided not to slaughter “that particular golden goose.”

Luckily for “Blue Bloods” fans, CBS has given them at least one more season in which to enjoy the exploits of the Reagan family. And in fact, Selleck told People last year that he could see the show lasting for quite a bit longer.

“I don’t think there is an end point,” Selleck said. “I think there is a lot of life in the show, as long as you let your characters grow and get older.”

Selleck Has Been Lucky to Have Two Hit Series

Selleck starred in multiple successful movies midway through his career. But the bookends to his trajectory have been popular TV shows. It was “Magnum P.I.” that really launched the actor, and now, as he hits his 70s and approaches retirement age, it’s “Blue Bloods” that defines his golden years.

Frank Reagan is, like Selleck, a grandpa who’s getting on in years. He’s pretty different from Magnum in most respects. However, in a 2017 interview with CBS This Morning, Selleck discussed some of the similarities between “Blue Bloods” and “Magnum P.I.” The shows have in common the idea of the man alone, he said.

“Frank is a widower,” Selleck explained. “He’s still wearing his wedding ring. Magnum, for all that hype, wasn’t very successful with women, and still considered himself married, ironically.”

Plus, he added, both characters turned out to be compelling enough for the audience to want to follow the action through their eyes. And indeed, while “Blue Bloods” has already outlasted “Magnum P.I.,” audiences show no sign of getting bored with the show yet.
