Being a police officer requires you to be in a certain level of physical shape. And, while playing a police officer in a television show such as “Blue Bloods” isn’t as serious as real-life police work, you still need to be in shape to bring your character to life. You want to offer a realistic portrayal of your character, after all.

This is something “Blue Bloods” star Will Estes knows very well. He plays New York City Police Department officer Jamie Reagan in the hit CBS show. And, he talked about what he does to get in shape to play the son of NYPD Commissioner Frank Reagan (played by Tom Selleck) each season during an interview with Men’s Journal.

As part of his effort to portray a New York City police officer as realistically as possible, Estes turns to someone who has real-life experience of the high-risk job. That person works as a consultant on “Blue Bloods.”

“We have an incredible technical advisor on the show who was a detective with the NYPD for 24 years” Estes shared. “He did homicide, and has seen it and done it all. I go to him for everything, and I just try to soak it all up.”

Having someone who has decades of on-the-job police experience has been helpful to Will Estes in his work on “Blue Bloods.”

“For me as an actor, what helps me are the finer points, the small nuances and the things that give insight into the mentality and the emotional content of the work, of the job, of being a police officer,” Estes also told Men’s Journal.

‘Blue Bloods’ Star Will Estes Said He Focuses His Training Based On the Role He is Playing

Regarding how he prepares to play a part, “Blue Bloods” star Will Estes said he focuses his approach based on the character he is playing.

“I try to train based on the role,” Estes shared. “I played a marine once so all I did was running, pushups and boxing. …did anything that was combat-oriented. … would go shoot and box and just sort of get into the whole mindset.”

Unsurprisingly for someone who spends so much of their time in front of a camera, the 42-year-old Estes does what he can to stay in shape even when he’s not playing Jamie Reagan in “Blue Bloods.”

“In general I just like to run around and stay active,” Will Estes also said. “I did a little gymnastics when I was a kid so I’ll run around and find a bar and try to do as many pull-ups as I can do.”

As far as his diet is concerned, this “Blue Bloods” star takes a fairly simple approach.

“In terms of nutrition, I just try to eat clean,” the actor also shared.
