These days, it seems like every successful film or television franchise is getting some sort of reboot. There have been reimaginings of original material, for example. There have also been prequels of franchises, as well as remakes. The list goes on. According to Will Estes – who is one of the stars of “Blue Bloods” – a reimagining of the popular family crime drama has been considered.

Although, it’s probably safe to say that this new take on the CBS series wasn’t all that serious of an idea. However, that reimagining is still somewhat surprising. And, probably because of that, it hasn’t happened – and probably never will.

Estes plays New York City Police department officer Jamie Reagan in “Blue Bloods.” Jamie is one of the children of NYPD Commissioner Frank Reagan. Jamie is just one member of a family that has devoted their lives to keeping the people of New York City safe. Estes talked about this most likely never to be realized project during an interview with Nerds of Color.

“If ‘Blue Bloods‘ could do a crossover with any show you’re personally a fan of, which would you pick?” Will Estes was asked during the interview. Instead of naming another show on the CBS network – we all know how networks enjoy producing crossovers within the shows on their networks, after all – Estes offered up another idea. That is the idea of a “Blue Bloods” musical.

“That’s a really great question! We’ve all talked about doing a musical episode that’s ‘all a dream’ at the end of it. As in one of the characters wakes up and has dreamed a musical version of a ‘Blue Bloods’ episode,” Estes explained.

However, he is very aware that such a project most likely will never come to fruition. “I don’t really think it’s gonna happen though. Ha!” he added.

Of course, the idea of a “Blue Bloods” musical in and of itself is ridiculous, even if Estes offered some explanation for it by making it a “dream.”

The format of “Blue Bloods” is not at all fit for a musical. Can you imagine Tom Selleck as his “Blue Bloods” character Frank Reagan breaking out into song? That’s something that is difficult to imagine even if you aren’t a die-hard fan of the show.

This is true even if one of its stars was part of the Broadway cast of a famous musical. That star is Len Cariou. He plays Henry Reagan – Jamie’s grandfather and Frank’s father – in the CBS series.

Long before he joined the show’s cast, Cariou had a successful career on the Broadway stage. Part of that career included the title role in the famous Stephen Sondheim musical, “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.”
