Michael Landon was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in April 1991. The disease eventually killed him a few months later in July of 1991. When he found out that he was dealing with an inoperable disease, he decided to make light of the situation.

After finding out, he invited ten journalists to his place so that they could break the news. During his visit, he was jovial and welcoming. More importantly, he was cracking jokes the entire time with the reporters.

This just goes to show what kind of person that Michael Landon was in life. It takes a special kind of person to joke about the prospects of death.

Michael Landon Joking About His Battle With Cancer

In May of 1991, the Associated Press released comments from Michael Landon. During the interview, they focused on his battle with pancreatic and liver cancer.

His answers are about as candid as they come, taking each question in stride. But, he was adamant throughout that he was not going to give up his life easily.

“Look, there [are] two things that can happen. I can win, or I can lose. And I can handle both. I’m not the kind of person who gives up without a fight. If I’m gonna die, death’s gonna have to do a lot of fighting to get me. I’m not just gonna lie down and let it happen.”

At the time of the diagnosis, Michael Landon was living in his Malibu ranch with his kids and wife, Cindy. He was getting top-notch care and even experimenting with alternative medicine.

He was doing all he could to fight the disease ravaging his body. Yet, he still made sure to keep a sense of humor about the entire ordeal.

“Damn carrots are turning me orange. And every time I eat or drink, I swallow digestive enzymes to replace what the pancreas has stopped producing. And then, once a day, I take a tried-and-true remedy for intestinal irritation – a coffee enema. Yup, I get filled to the rim. Organic coffee, I might add.”

Michael Landon was certainly having fun describing his daily battle with cancer. It must have been a sight to see, trying to gross out the reporter who was covering the story. But, he wasn’t finished there, he kept going.

“And you know what? The same day I started this new program, the cramps stopped. And they’ve never come back. … No pain, I feel great. Crazy, isn’t it? I may be dying, and I feel great.”

So, even though he was suffering from this disease, Michael Landon’s light-hearted personality still shown through. Again, it shows just how incredible of a person he was in life.
