No one likes to see missed cues at the CMA Awards. But country music stars Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood have had quite a few close calls on that front.
The duo has hosted the awards show together 11 times. And Underwood in particular really struggled with the costume changes required, Paisley revealed in a recent interview with Watch What Happens Live.
Brad Paisley on The ‘Conniption’
But there was one time when Underwood actually didn’t make it. She missed her cue, and “she was having a conniption” backstage, Paisley said.
“She was still getting zipped back there,” he explained.
Paisley was quick on his feet, though. He read both parts, editing as he went for clarity.
“And so I basically… had to kind of edit an entire script without her out there and read, like, what would have been her lines, and had to do the math in my head… and then read the whole thing by myself,” he said.
For her part, Underwood has called Paisley her “partner in crime and friend for life.”
In 2019, Underwood co-hosted the awards with Reba McEntire and Dolly Parton instead of Paisley. However, Underwood is no longer planning to be a CMA Awards host, according to The Boot.
“I’m so incredibly grateful to everyone involved with the CMA Awards all these years,” Underwood wrote in her announcement. “It’s hard to imagine topping what we have accomplished together, so I’ve decided that it’s time to pass the hosting torch (at least for now!) to others that will cherish it and honor it as much as I do. I’ve got so many exciting things coming in the new year and beyond, and I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for all of us.”
For the 2020 edition of the CMA Awards, Darius Rucker and Reba McEntire will host the event.
