Legendary actress Brooke Shields is recovering from her severe leg injury and staph infection and is opening up about the lengthy process. During a recent interview with People magazine, she admitted to feeling like she’s hit “another plateau” in her healing.

This year, the 55-year-old Hollywood icon broke her femur in a gym accident and, as a result, had to undergo several surgeries

In the same interview, the Blue Lagoon actress admitted it’s been an exhausting process, although she’s now able to get around “with no crutches and no cane.” She added, “And I’m starting to work out again. But … there’s bone soreness, and there’s a lot of weakness.”

While the star still attends physical therapy, which she calls “a lot of work,” she also added that having patience has been vital in her healing.

“I’m able to stand on that leg fully and balance, and I’m getting all of that back and just kinetically getting more connected again and re-educating all of my muscles to fire appropriately again,” she continued.

“You really have to do it every day, and you have to have a mindset because it can be very frustrating,” she added. She went on to say that it’ll be “a while” before she’s back to full strength, “but every day it’s a little bit better, and I’m beginning each day to start fresh.”

While the road to a full recovery isn’t easy, Shields is thankful after she thought she was paralyzed after she realized she couldn’t feel her toes at the time.

“It felt like it was all in slow motion. And then I just started screaming,” she said about the accident. “Sounds came out that I’ve never heard before. The pain was so excruciating.”

During the incident, she flew off a balance board in the gym and shattered the bone when she landed. As a result, surgeons had to place two metal rods in her leg. However, this wasn’t the only surgery Shields had to endure. She underwent a second surgery when another part of her femur moved. Later, surgeons placed five more rods and a metal plate to keep it intact.

After a two-and-a-half-week stint in the hospital, she finally was able to return home. However, she found herself back in the hospital when she developed a staph infection. Doctors determined she needed emergency surgery on the IV site to treat the infection and had three blood transfusions.

Despite all the hardship, the Suddenly Susan star remains optimistic. On Tuesday, she shared an Instagram pic wherein she posed on the beach alongside her two daughters, Rowan Francis Henchy, 18, and Grier Hammond Henchy, 15, while wearing matching bathing suits.

After she posted the pic, fans were quick to take note of the freshly healed scar she got due to the emergency surgeries. “Soaking it all in,” she captioned the post.

“Wow you look incredible,” one person commented with a fire emoji. “It’s amazing how your scar is barely noticeable after what you went through not long ago,” another added.
