Bubba Wallace tweeted Sunday that his heart was broken after learning of the death of a friend and former NASCAR and Joe Gibbs Racing executive. Therefore, Wallace is now dedicating his performance at Talladega Speedway Sunday to Joseph “JJ” Damato who died Saturday.

“Not sure if you could’ve met a nicer guy. My heart is broken, today’s race will be run in honor of my friend JJ! Rest Easy Bro!” he tweeted before the Yellawood 500.

In addition, Adam Stern of the Sports Business Journal said Joe Gibbs Racing cars would include a “JJ” decal Sunday in honor of Damato.

@JoeGibbsRacing and some other teams will run this decal today at Talladega in remembrance of JGR executive Joseph “JJ” Damato, who tragically passed away yesterday. Damato was a beloved longtime NASCAR executive who served most recently as VP of marketing services at JGR.”

Stern also said there would be a moment of silence for Damato before the race.

Joe Gibbs Racing issues statement

The Joe Gibbs Racing organization tweeted about Damato’s death. Above all they said he was a beloved friend and coworker who they would greatly miss.

“JJ Damato spent his time making those around him happier. He spread positivity wherever he went: JGR, #NASCAR, or other places he once called home. He gifted us great friendship & an example of how to treat others. We are greatly saddened by his loss & praying for his family,”

No cause of death was released, though it was reported to be sudden and unexpected.

Joe Gibbs Racing signed Bubba Wallace as a development driver in 2010.
