Carly Pearce’s interview with a radio station got emotional Wednesday. Pearce learned mid-interview that she’d won Musical Event of the Year at the CMA Awards.

The award was for “I Hope You’re Happy Now,” which she sang with Lee Brice.

Pearce Gets Emotional

“Can I tell you guys something? I just found out I won Musical Event of the Year!” Pearce announced, before breaking down in tears. “I literally just found out.”

Pearce also shared the moment on her Instagram account.

“GUYS I WAS SITTING DOING INTERVIEWS AND GOT THE NEWS THAT @leebrice AND I WON ‘MUSICAL EVENT OF THE YEAR,’” she posted. Moreover, she added, “This was the moment I found out as I sobbed on the phone in my pjs. Thank you, thank you, thank you. In a year that started as the hardest I’ve ever experienced, YALL are helping me see the big, bright, BEAUTIFUL light at the end of the tunnel.”

A CMA Awards Hiccup

Pearce was supposed to sing the song with Brice at the awards show on Wednesday. But Brice recently tested positive for COVID-19. So he had to cancel, according to Sounds Like Nashville.

Lady A’s Charles Kelley will be singing the song with Pearce instead.

“I Hope You’re Happy Now” is reportedly Pearce’s apology to her ex-boyfriend. She broke up with him when she developed feelings for her current husband.

“This is a genuine feeling that I think he probably knew would eventually come out in some way in my music,” she told her record label. “Because that’s what we do as songwriters. And I feel like what I went through so many people go through and what Lee [Brice] is singing about so many people go through.”

Pearce said she’s happily married. But she’s glad her ex is in a good place, too. Hence the song’s title.

“I genuinely hope that they’re happy now,” Pearce said.
