Today, legendary rapper Snoop Dogg turns 50 years old, and to celebrate, we thought we’d take you back to this magical moment when he performed with country icon Willie Nelson on Letterman. Ten years ago, the two unlikely friends sang “Superman,” combining their vastly different styles in a groundbreaking collaboration.

While Nelson shredded on an acoustic guitar and another bandmate on harmonica, the California-native lyricist took the reigns at the microphone. It went a little something like this:

And when I die put it on my stone
God said Snoopy take your bad ass home
You wasn’t Superman, no I wasn’t Superman
I’m tryin ‘do more than I can
I got a little out of hand
I wasn’t Superman
Tryin’ to do more than I can
I got a little out of hand
I ain’t Superman

Since this epic performance, complementing country music with a touch of rap, and vise versa, has become a genre of its own with a versatile audience. Soon to follow in Snoop Dogg and Willie Nelson’s footsteps were Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus with their own mash-up, “Old Town Road.”

Before we could get to that point, though, we had to have the friendship of Nelson and Snoop Dogg come to life during a jam sesh in Amsterdam.

How Snoop Dogg and Willie Nelson Became Friends

Back in 2008, Snoop Dogg gave Willie Nelson a call while the country star was on tour in the Netherlands. When asked if he wanted to do a collaboration, Nelson agreed. So, the rap artist flew out to Amsterdam, not sparing a single moment, and joined the country star in his hotel room to start making music. Eventually, this resulted in their first song together, “My Medicine.”

First, though, the two had to “enjoy life,” as Snoop Dogg so poignantly put it.

While discussing his friendship with Nelson on The Tonight Show, the rapper detailed the activities of that first fateful night with his new pal.

“I was in his hotel room, and we was playing dominoes and enjoying life,” Snoop Dogg shared. “After enjoying life … we developed a hunger. … Naturally, we wanted to go to Kentucky Fried Chicken, which is one of our favorite spots, his and mine. So we pull up in the drive-through, we order the chicken, they give it to us, and they hand us the big bucket. We take the top off and we both put our hand in at the same time. And we grab the same piece of chicken at the same damn time. And I said, You know what Willie? That’s yours. Go ahead, take that, dog.”

Since then, the two have stayed great friends, proving that music and a tendency to enjoy life can bring just about anyone together.
