Just days after Jesse Spencer made his official departure from Chicago Fire, the showrunner of the hit series, Derek Haas, is now sharing more details about the long-time castmate’s exit and who will take over his character’s spot on Truck 81.

According to TVLine, Haas discussed during a Zoom press conference how Chicago Fire’s Stella, who passed the lieutenant’s exam last season, seems like the right candidate for the job. “The spot on Truck 81 is potentially open. And she hasn’t come back to claim it as of the next episode. So that has its own issues and ramifications.”

Haas does clarify that Chicago Fire character Herrman won’t be in line for the promotion. “Herrmann is Engine lieutenant. I think that’s going to stay.”

As previously reported, Jesse Spencer left Chicago Fire after nine seasons. Haas spoke about Spencer’s departure by stating he and the show’s crew may have been on borrowed time for a long time. “And of course, I wanted to talk Jesse into staying and coming back and doing all the times for as long as we could.”

Spencer clarified that while he loves Chicago Fire, he has had an exhausting 18 years straight of acting. “I’ve been doing TV for a long time. I added it up. And I think this year is my 18th year of network television straight since I went straight from House into Chicago Fire. But there’s other things that I would love to do in the future. And there’s some family that I need to take care of. 18 years is a long time. That’s a long stretch.”

Spencer goes on to add although it was a tough decision to leave Chicago Fire, it was the right time to do so for him. “I thought it was time to leave the show. And he agreed that we should at least get Casey to 200 episodes. When the time comes, the time comes.”

How Is Casey’s Departure Going to Affect the Other ‘Chicago Fire’ Characters

Also during his Zoom press conference, Haas revealed how Casey’s departure is going to affect the other Chicago Fire characters, especially Casey’s girlfriend and best friend. “We’re going to see some, obviously, aftereffects with Brett. It’s going to be hard on Brett. Going into a long-distance relationship and not knowing what the rules are of a long-distance relationship.”

Haas did reveal that Severide is looking at Casey’s quarters in the next episode and what that means to him. “And then we’ll play around with everyone’s reactions.”

Haas previously explained that the replacement of Truck 81’s commander officer is going to be a major storyline through the winter break. “Because obviously there are some shifting chairs within the firehouse.”
