Chicago Fires Jesse Spencer made an interesting comment when he said that Matt Casey and Kelly Severide’s “fat had been cut off,” so what did he mean? Spencer, who played Matt Casey until departing the show last week, didn’t hold back in a recent interview about the series and Matt and Kelly’s fascinating dynamic.

While Casey and Severide started out disliking each other, their relationship grew into a very strong friendship. Not to mention, the two Chicago Fire characters now live together.

During a One Chicago Day celebration in February, Jesse Spenser and Severide actor Taylor Kinney talked about the evolution of their character’s friendship with CarterMatt.

Spencer noted that time was a huge factor in what allowed the two Chicago Fire characters to become friends. They matured and grew and soon lost sight of their bitter rivalry. All the unnecessary bits of their relationship, aka the fat, had been removed.

“They’ve settled into themselves and they make a really good team. The fat has been cut off — do you know what I mean? They have each other as a solid relationship and Taylor’s great to work with. Now, they can lean on each other and have conversations about each others’ ‘girl problems’ … They don’t get super-deep about it, but they can be like (uses bro voice) ‘what’s going on with you bro?’ (switches voice) ‘I dunno bro, what’s up with you?’” the actor said.

Spenser noted that not all of their talks have to be crazy deep for them to be good ones.

“Sometimes, it’s superficial, but that’s all they need. They’re there for each other! They’re good friends and they live with each other,” he said.

Jesse Spencer Left ‘Chicago Fire’ Last Week

In last Wednesday’s episode, Matt Casey decided to leave the firehouse and move to Oregon. The move surprised fans of the show, but it wasn’t completely unexpected. Casey leaves to take care of two boys who really need him.

Jesse Spencer explained to People that he left the show to pursue other projects. The actor also has family of his own that he wants to be there for. He’s been a regular on TV for 18 years. First with House, and then he immediately found success with Chicago Fire.

“This was a difficult decision because I have loved the show from the start but there are other things that I would like to do in the future, and there’s some family that I need to take care of and 18 years is a long time,” he explained.

While seeing Jesse Spencer leave the series is saddening, there’s now a new plotline that needs resolution. Who will become the next captain? That’s a question that’ll follow the characters throughout the season. If you want to tune in to Chicago Fire, it airs on NBC Wednesday Nights at 9/8 Central.
