‘Chicago Med’ Showrunner Dick Wolf Reveals Gross Behind-the-Scenes Trick Used in Wednesday’s Episode

These days, special effects seem to have captured the TV and movie-going audiences’ imagination. But if you ask us, there’s nothing quite like some well-executed practical effects. Whether it’s a big explosion or something simple as a cup full of prop liquid, the teams responsible for putting stuff like that together are criminally under-celebrated. “Chicago Med” co-creator Dick Wolf’s production company is doing their part to change that.

Wolf Entertainment’s Twitter account shared a post giving “Chicago Med” fans some behind-the-scenes info regarding a scene from Wednesday’s episode of the show.

The prop team was tasked with coming up with something to simulate an activated charcoal cocktail. It’s something frequently used by doctors to prevent poisons from being absorbed by the body. And if the real thing is anything like what “Chicago Med” cooked up behind the scenes, it’s not something you want to be drinking.

As it happens, all it takes is a bit of food coloring and some beverage thickener (generally made of starch or some sort of food-safe gel) to get a good approximation. And even though the fake stuff consumed on the set of “Chicago Med” isn’t real charcoal, drinking it looks like a bad time. We wouldn’t be surprised if that reaction was utterly genuine.

Longtime ‘Chicago Med’ Stars Say Goodbye

With Season 8 of “Chicago Med” underway, there is plenty to get fans excited. Unfortunately, there’s been plenty of sad news over the past few months. Stars Yaya DaCosta and Torrey DeVitto, who had been with the show since it started in 2015, announced their departures.

DaCosta played April Sexton, a nurse in the Emergency Department of Gaffney Chicago Medical Center. She shared a post on Instagram in May, thanking fans for their support over the years.

“Well, looks like the cat is out of the bag… All good things must come to an end. It has been such an honor and pure joy to bring Dr. Natalie Manning to life for all of you on Chicago Med for the past 6 seasons. But it is now time for her and me to bow out and say goodbye,” part of her caption read.

And the hits kept coming. “Chicago Med” fans were sad to learn that Torrey DeVitto, who played Dr. Natalie Manning, was also leaving.

“The cast and crew were so good to me and the background actors gave me so much energy and love, even in silence. I’m going to miss everyone dearly, and of course, all of you who watch the show religiously and have also become part of the One Chicago family,” DeVitto wrote in her own Instagram post.
